Excavating My 8

Post by StormyBlue »

Dear All,
Today I excavated my 8 by the simple expedient of washing the beauty.
As days of accumulated storm grime peeled away, it was wonderful to
see her 'smiling again', and to be reminded of the unique lines of this
wonderful car.
The contours of the car seem deliberately designed to accept, reflect and
hold light, and thus to promote a sense of liquid fluidity, and movement.
Technology aside, one of the most satisfying aspects of ownership is
that the infinite permutations of light and angle of view can delight the
eye unexpectedly. When this 'morphing' and apparent change of contour
catches you unawares (as when parking in an unfamiliar place, or in volatile
atmospheric conditions) you see the car literally in a new light.
This lends an illusiory sense of the car as not fixed and static but with its
own sense of life or spirit.
Given that these thoughts are prompted by the recent deluges upon the car
bodywork, it is perhaps an irony that the considered and delicate influence
of the Japanese artists Hiroshige and Hokusai, with their memorable paintings
and prints of tidal waves and typhoons seems to be at large in Mazda's design
signature; and long may it be so.

Regards,

PS: 'RX7 Specialities' (Royary Engine. Com) - Superb YouTube channel.
Unobstrusive commentary and film style accompanies a highly knowlegable
rotary mechanic. Rebuilds, Porting, Polishing, Three rotor builds.
This mechanic/engineer works with the skill, efficiency and deftness of
a talented surgeon.

Also: YouTube, but total opposite in style: 'Auto Expert TV. John Cadogan, an
independent Australian motoring journalist and scourge of all that is car,
manufacturer, and motoring cant. Highly entertaining, but never fails to hit the
target when 'speaking truth to power'.
Illuminating review of Mazda 3 versus entry level Mercedes (the Mazda wins,
hands down).
