Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
Currently got big build on Rex resprayed purple full mazdaspeed. Going for turbo build, suspension, big brakes tyres. So need space in engine bay.
Looking to put battery in boot. Seeing if anyone disagrees with kit before buy and install. As I’m unsure if the battery tray should be plastic or box type as where would the fault current go. Or am I overthinking. And has the kit got an adequate protective device for full car. My cars is at shop been sprayed just installing minor bits before putting bumpers back on.

Want to make me one Neil
I’ve got no experience in welding & fabrication so mine wouldn’t be the best or safe so to say. Off the shelf is best for me. Dimensions size up correctly for the fleabay box for a snug fit. Maybe need bigger threads to secure it down.

They would be of the same design as mine in the photo but can adjust dimensions accordingly to suit your battery size.

Re: Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
It’ll be made of aluminium, it will require etch primer then a top coat. I’m sure you could do that with a rattle can. It would push the price up as I’d have to purchase them.

Re: Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
Word of warning on running thick cable learned from doing audio installs, in the listing on eBay they just state 300amps 40mm which doesn't say a lot.
Find out what the actual gauge of the internal conductor is and not the dimensions including the sheathing, also if it's pure copper or copper coated aluminium.
4awg copper should do it or 2awg CCA.

Bmw 3 or 5 series has the correct cable. We sourced it from a breakers, perfect length too.

Re: Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
Note that the original battery box has a cooling air duct and batteries that are oversized, restricting the airflow, have been known to overheat and bulge the sides - which is the first stage towards meltdown.
You need to provide an airflow within the boot for relocation.
Conventional batteries also give-off hydrogen when they charge, which is another reason to vent the boot space.

Re: Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
I'm not sure Dave. I doubt a battery in the boot would need cooling. I think it's cooled in the engine bay primarily due to engine bay temps, not internal heating.

Re: Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
Similarly I've not seen anything in the way of dedicated active battery cooling on batteries stored in boots from factory.
Pipes coming off of them from the battery vents to outside the car however, yes.
Putting one in a rotary engine bay right above the rad however, then yes, duct that sucka.

Re: Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
Yep. Probably best not to put it right above the back box though, just to be on the safe side...

Re: Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
Unlike motorcycle batteries, few car batteries have vent pipes fitted to take the gases away.
Some just have holes in the cell caps while others pretend to be "sealed-for-life", while having hidden vents.

Re: Battery relocation. Correct Kit..
How about remove the existing vent panels in boot as battery id prefer to be hidden. Remove the insulation on the corner of which the battery will be installed & vent is. Putting a heat repelling material under the mount to prevent/migitate excess heat from the exhaust system. Haven’t done this before. Don’t mind overkill for piece of mind. I can’t place it close to rear seats because of the mazdaspeed strut brace. My BMW battery location (in the boot) hasn’t got any ventilation and is enclosed from what I’ve seen. And with adequate protection device close to the battery that should pickup on current overload.warpc0il wrote: ↑Sat Nov 17, 2018 9:11 amNote that the original battery box has a cooling air duct and batteries that are oversized, restricting the airflow, have been known to overheat and bulge the sides - which is the first stage towards meltdown.

Hopefully not a component issue (gasp) more than likely to be the way it’s routed or the wrong type of p clip lol
