Coils
Has anyone tried motorbike coils not hairdryer's (wee bikes), but superbikes spec?
I'm just asking as these are designed for high revs and harsh environments unlike coils that are made for low rpm applications!!
P.s. I understand this might get mocked, but I'll live!!

I'm not aware of anyone trying. Fancy being a Guinea pig?

Re: Coils
Was thinking I could maybe get a set of the Ducati Moto GP road spec bike or the R1 crossplain as they've got variable firing!

Electronics is not a strong point even though I've got a bit of paper saying different, so I'd avoid this area as much as possible!

Re: Coils
Good idea (I was thinking the same..). The thing that put me off is that most bike coils are on-plug designs, I think, and with the RX-8's horizontal plugs I'd expect the weight of the coil would snap them off. Happy to be proved wrong though.

Re: Coils
interesting idea as we use the honda CBR coil a bit at work on all sorts of things as its proven to be very versatile
and its possible to modify a coil on plug coil to have a remote lead , you end up machining bits of PEEK to support the lead end and glue ti all together

Re: Coils
I looked into this in some detail a couple of years ago.
The problem is trying to find the technical specs for any of the oem m/c coils. I did manage to find the specs for some aftermarket upgrade coils for Triumph but those coils were nearly twice the price of D585, while still not offering any theoretical benefits.
Without the specs there's a good chance of either cooking the coils or running them at less than half-charge.

Re: Coils
Spark duration is a little down on what is currently available... how relevant that is in the grand scheme of things I don't know.

Re: Coils
Yes, I've seen plenty fail which is why we have invested £1000's on a bespoke coil for the Rx8 not only providing more ignition power but OEM fitment as well as a lifetime warranty

Re: Coils
i would like to know the condition of the plugs and leads and general installation throughout the usage of the revc coils that have failed.
lots of people only change them when there is a problem as its not instantly noticeable during normal driving. i would put money on rev c coils lasting as long as the engine IF the rest of the ignition componesnt are kept in good condition and no water ingress is experienced.

Re: Coils
when i first bought an RX8 i got new leads, plugs and coils from MRP they were rev C versions after less than 15k one or more had failed . I opted for a used set of585 initially from RR and those outlasted both my cars and are still running on someone else's
