Battery behaviour

Post by kopite72 »

Ok bit of a strange one and it's going to sound a bit weird but does a dying battery drain faster when the car is parked on an incline?

Reason I ask is my battery is on its last legs ( no biggie I'll order a new one) but last night when I came out of work the thing was completely dead. I had parked the car that morning on an incline and toddled off in to work.

I'm a bit mystified as to how it drained so quickly as it never drained that fast before. I had no lights on in the car, the boot was shut so there was nothing causing a drain.

I jumped started the car with a set of leads which was fine but the complete drain is a mystery. Btw the car is fine now, all is well with the battery ( apart from needing a new one

Not sure about the incline parking thing, though I guess you would know that the cold weather will kill a dying battery much quicker.

Yeah I know the cold kicks seven types of sh!te out of a battery but the speed of the drain was puzzling....

Never mind, I'm off to buy a piston engined car

I had a similar experience Ian, and I think it's got less to do with the incline you parked it on than the state of the battery to begin with. Mine was on its last legs for a good couple of months, then one night it just gave up the ghost without warning. I'd just got back from an airport run so it was as charged up as it could have been, and overnight it just let go and would barely crank the engine the next day. I boosted it from the Jag to drive it down to Halfords and pick up a new battery, and it didn't miss a beat after that.
To Do List: HKS CAMP2 install; cruise control; new exhaust; detail paintwork, possible respray

Done: Hayward Rotary rebuild and stage 2 port; Racing Beat ARBs, adjustable front droplinks, ram air intake and lightened flywheel; Exedy stage 1 clutch; Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs; Koyo radiator; heated front screen; EBC redstuff pads all round

Thing is Sam, it's been fine since, by that I mean it still needs replacing which I will do but if I'm out in the car for a bit and park up when I get home and leave it over night she'll fire up the next morning no probs.

The speed of the discharge in the episode I was initially describing just surprised me Sam but no biggie. I'll order a Varta E23 in the next week or so and drop it in, job done :D

Could be the fluid levels are low in the battery and the incline meant not all the plates were covered?
