I’m a bit worried

Post by Dave2112 »

On Saturday myself and Chris Holmes decided to test our new Rotary compression tester out. Turns out we have a faulty sensor,, which is being replaced by Mick in Australia.

But that’s not what I’m worried about.

When I put the car back together and fired her up, she was idling really rough at low revs
So checked again that all the leads were on the right plugs, still the same rough idle.

Anyway got her home, and took all the leads and plugs out to inspect them( plugs are only 3 months old). All looked fine. Leads are Magnecor and RR585 coils.

Put it all back together again and still the rough idle with intermittent Cel flashing on dash.checked code and got a P0203 or was it PO302 , can’t remember which way round it was . Anyway misfire on Bank 2.

Did the brake stomp to reset trims, no change
Disconnected the battery for 10 mins, no change

Took it for a run round the block and it was coughing and farting all the way around, then when I had to come back up the hill, there was just no power, had to drop into 1st to keep going. By the time I got back outside the house it sounded like a tractor :(

So does it sound like one or more coils have failed and it’s only running on one rotor, or could it be more sinister than that....?

I am going to borrow a set of coils from Chris tonight and swap them over tomorrow just to test that side of it.

Any other suggestions would be welcome, or some warm words of reassurance

Dave i don't want to be the prophet of doom but that tractor sound is usually the noise associated with bearing failure.Obviously I hope to God I'm wrong but it's a pretty unmistakable sound.I was going to suggest the usual suspect like blocked cat or dodgy coils ect ect but once I read " tractor " I was like hmmm :-k

Does it sound like this? If so it's the rear bearing :(

Not sure if it’s the same as that Ian, but yeah I was wondering if it was a bearing issue?
Oh well I’ll know by tomorrow, I wish I’d taken a video of it last night, but don’t want to cold start it again until I’ve swapped the coils.

I had the same recently and it was down to 2 failed d585 coils.
Replaced them and all was well again.
Fingers crossed for you.

Did you disconnect the ESS when doing the compression test?

You could have a failing ESS or just a poor connection, as that would cause misfires.

Sorry to hear that you got a duff tester but glad that Mike is standing by his warranty.

No I didn’t disconnect the ess Dave  I just replaced the ess a few months back, with a one from Bigpete. That’s not to say that this one hasn’t failed as well though?

If you remove the ESS sensor and measure its resistance it should be 1100ohm replace it if its more than this and check the state of the wiring its can go very hard and brittle down there
as you've disturbed it to do the test I'd say its likely you have a wiring fault and a rough speed signal
if you have a scan tool plug that it and set it to monitor so you read the engine speed and see if its dropping out or reading spuriously high or low

Definitely worth that coil swap first, hopefully it's just that. Was it sounding rough even when cold?

Fingers crossed for ya buddy. [-o<

Check that you haven't strained the connection to the maf unit.

Again a real time odb monitor will tell you if both the maf and iat sensor readings are making sense.

I haven’t tried it cold yet John, I will leave it until I have the spare coils on (tomorrow), I will also check the ess and MAF wiring. I did clean the MAF yesterday though and it all looked ok.

have you tried wiggling the connectors on the coils? i have found them to be poor and had lots of trouble with them intermittently causing the coils to stop and start working.

worth getting yourself one of these for diagnostic purposes.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I swapped out the D585's for the coils I borrowed off Chris, in between the thunder storms today and fired her up. Running sweet as a nut again :D :D :D

It would appear to be coil no2 after my testing with multi meter, so spoke to Josh at R.Revs and have packaged them all up and sent them back to them for testing.
Will leave the car off the road for the time being as the coils from Chris were ECP specials I think, but also my dwell has been set for the 585's and it will fry the cheap coils.

To say I'm relieved is the understatement of the year

Exactly the trouble I had with mine all fine once Phil lent me some coils... Revs have tested mine and said they are fine so have to refit them and see what happens but does seem like I'm not the only one to experience the same issue

I also had the same coil issue, and the same outcome as Wiggles after sending them to RR for testing. Still haven't got round to refitting and testing yet though..

If the coils are testing okay is the issue not likely to be the harness adapter?

i keep mentioning this but no one seems to acknowledge it!?

the d585 coils get a bad rap, but i would bet 95% of the issues with them are due to bad harness adapter connections rather than the coils themselves.

regressing slightly to the stock coils; people say these are crap, but its well know the stock leads allow water ingress. i think a well looked after set of stock coils, with decent leads that dont experience any water ingress with the plugs kept in good condition and replaced when required would last far longer than anyone would expect.

in hindsight i would have gone stock coils all day long......

The adaptor is the thing I hate most about 585s, the Bennet built bracket makes things a bit better as its not all wedged in a tiny gap
