I've ended up replacing coolant nearly every year due to new to me car around 04, rebuild, car engine swap, then performance aluminium radiator and finally fitting SOHN.
I use Ravenoil fl22 concentrate as it seems to be cheapest.
Back flushed radiator with hose pipe then ran it up on some distilled water (put on heater) and undid the coolant drain on the block as well as in the radiator to drain out more of the system before refilling with 60/40 mix.
It's best to check the condition of the hoses and also the state of the aluminum on the block as mine needed some light sanding due to corrosion.
I've found it's best to fill up the coolant then start the car and watch the levels, top up if needed then give it some revs and top up again.

I'm glad I posted the original question, seems that there is a bit more to coolant than I realised. Internet research tells me that coolant with silicates is not required for the RX-8 and may be detrimental. Have a '13 Smart in the household that requires the opposite. So looks like Comma G30 and Comma Super Long Life are good options (not much difference between the two), as well as Triple QX red which is an identical spec to Comma Super Long Life. As it happens, I've an unopened 5 litres pre-mix of Triple QX red in my garage that I had for another car and another 5 litres of the same is just £8 at ECP at the moment, so I think that will do the job.
