Paint Code Location

Post by Deathaga »

Ok, so I know this is a stupid question which is probably why I've search the forum and cannot find anything, but where do I find the paint code for my Rx8? I've looked in the door jams and theres no stickers.

I'm assuming seeing as its a 2004 car and its red that its velocity red, but I've order some paint and sprayed some bits and although it matches in some places it is pretty different from the rear quarter to the rear bumper. I know that plastic panels tend to be a very slightly different colour but this seems different to that.

The paint I'm spraying is a tricoat basecoat which is what the velocity red should be, but my sprayed panels look redder i that makes sense.

Just want to double check that the code, I have a pic of the vin plate handy if that helps.

Thanks in advance and sorry about the stupid question

I managed to get other places to match just this corner is proving weird, blending into the same panel is fine I think its just cos I have such a hard edge with the bumper. What I might do is blend into the bumper a bit to like 6-8 inches to the curves so as to trick the eye a bit.

Watched a vid of gunman doing velocity red and he blended about half way across an attached panel so I guess that is my problem.

Still be handy to know I 100% have the right colour though lol

Hi

Yep I know that, what I can't find is where on the car it says what colour the car is if that makes sense.

allsorts of variables here. has car ever had any new panels? paint fade after 14years ,has it been parked in the same orientation for most of its life. any or all of these can make big differences in shades. blending in is your best bet.

thanks, I know the car had body work last year and the company that did it except for being very very lazy and not that great, did actually do a nice job blending the colour, I'm spraying over their repairs although I've taken most of their paint off. They did the sills and then put textured undercoat on and then sprayed that body colour!!! Who does that!!?? Who wants bobbly sills? Its one of the nicest lines on the whole car the way it sweeps under the car. I did not pay for the work last year as it was done before I brought the car. I know she is mostly rust free which is about the only positive at the moment lol.

As far as I know, the code isn't presented anywhere on an RX8..

2004 and red - yes it is velocity red, but as already said, that is probably the hardest of the colours to match. I've been at meets and events where three or four velocity red cars were parked together and they were all different shades. :colors:

For future reference and anybody else trying to find paint codes, they're all listed here viewtopic.php?f=25&t=11189

So just a quick up as I got to do some polishing but the daylight gave out on me the other day.

So velocity red is a right pain to match. It shows a lot of the primer colour through so I’ve found putting a coat of oxide red primer over my grey/white primer gives me quicker and better colour match.

So in this pic I’ve sprayed the red quarter and blended into the bumper about 6-10”

I’ve only flatted and compounded it quickly so need to actually polish it to hide the lacquer blends more when looking closely. I’ll then wax and seal it when I’m happy and the paint has had a bit longer to breathe

I’m a bit late to the party here, but I have a 2004 red one. Some of the paint / panels seem to have a glimmer / glittery effect. Others are more ‘solid’ red. Could there be any copper red 2004 rx8s? Or is that colour from a later year?

Copper red as a colour was exclusive to the evolve and nemesis limited editions which were 2006/07 cars, and beside from that, velocity red was the only other red available on the RX-8s :thumleft:

Original factory velocity red does have a glittery effect in the paint where the sun hits it, it's almost like an orangey gold flake within 8) so if some are more "solid" red, it's either the lighting on that side that doesn't show the flake as well or it could have had previous paintwork done to it :-k

Or it may have faded or had different polish applied? It is quite amazing that at some shows and meets where we've had three or four velocity red cars parked next to each other they are all slightly different shades of red and on one or two different panels don't look quite the same. :?

At one meet there were two VRs parked together.

Looking from the front, the left one was darker than the right one.

Looking from the rear, the left one was darker than the right one.

Which sounds okay, until you really think about it..

My first RX8 at 1200 miles was rear ended and the body shop could not manage a paint match, they did manage three velocity pink jobs which I rejected. The insurance companies “engineer” said they should paint the whole car to which I said “No way, you’re not repainting my 1200mile car” and removed the car to a local independent body shop who had to buy a new bumper as the paint on the bumper was so thick it would not fit properly, so much for a large well known vehicle dealers in house body shop, and they got the match right first time.
The true test for VR, or any red, is to park under a sodium street light.

Hi all,
where do you buy your spray paint?
I asked Mazda Dealer but they want to sell me 150ml spray for 16 pounds...
I have Velocity Red 27A to match.
Thanks in advance.

Any local body shop can mix it to match your car.
