Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
Something I've noticed on eBay and Autotrader is that RX8 prices seem to be finally firming up a tad (ignoring non-runners). Has anyone else noticed this?
Might be being overly excited

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
The asking prices on ebay classified and Auto trader aren't any indication of what cars are selling for.
Most sellers have an inflated expectation on prices.

Probable both but it's buyers that determine the market value.

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
I take quite an interest in the pricing being from a car sales background, personally I would agree they have firmed up a bit. This is of course coming from a very low base though.
As the cars get older and examples with low mileage become harder to find we should see a gentle increase in values but I certainly wouldn't view one as an investment!

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
I'm sure that some of the special editions, obviously the PZ but also the 40th Anniversary and possibly the R3 will become recognised as modern classics and collectable in the future; if kept unmodified and away from the tin-worm in the meantime.
Similarly a good clean, unmodified, low-mileage, rust-free, Lightning Yellow (as only available in the first year of production) will become an investment, eventually.
My Lighting Yellow is good, quite clean, but doesn't qualify on the other counts.
There will also be a market for well-modified cars, with quality bodykits, wheels, ported engines, etc, but you're still hardly likely to recover the cost of the parts.
A low market value does have some benefits to existing owners, as more cars are being broken and used parts are common.
It's also a bit cheaper to insure but that also means that even minor damage can result in an insurance* write-off and some companies won't give you the option of buying back the damaged car - as a measure against potential insurance fraud.
How many people check whether their insurer would allow you to buy-back, before they renew?

Car sale values (particularly sports cars) usually go up in summer and drop again in winter. Keep an eye on it over the winter.

Well if we use this dealer's pricing as a basis, the value of all our cars has just doubled overnight!

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
Any dealer asking price is just the starting point for negotiation.
Some dealers will try floating a car at a ridiculous price, just in case some idiot will bite, and/or so someone can feel good about negotiating a 20% discount, without realising that they're still paying over the odds.
It helps if there either isn't a compatible car currently listed in the same area, or the only other one is another trader trying the same trick.

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
I'd say until the number of cars has dropped right off then we're unlikely to see a price rise
these cars were quire popular in the Uk
hence there's a reasonable trade in selling the cars into europe where there is far less stock and prices are more than doubled

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
Numbers are still on a rapid downward trajectory. There are a lot less left than were sold. About a quarter are left currently.350matt wrote: ↑Sun Oct 14, 2018 4:28 pmI'd say until the number of cars has dropped right off then we're unlikely to see a price rise

Prices won't rise until there are virtually none left or there are virtually none left on the road, whichever comes first.

I seriously doubt as they're expensive to run and only certain folk can or are willing as I've said before, good cars let down by high UK prices.

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
Take a trip to Europe... My R3, assuming it was running a working stock engine, would be worth ~£6k here in the UK - perhaps pushing £7k as it's a 2010 plate with 30k on the clock.
In France (or anywhere in western Europe to be honest) I could EASILY sell it for £12k.
In Canada or the US it would also be worth a similar price.
The UK is the RX8 haven in terms of prices at the moment. Eventually the numbers will drop and the prices may well lean up towards the rest of the world, but genuinely we have it SO good here with RXs it's unreal. The buyers don't really appreciate this.
The RX8 is a great car let down by Mazda and their early advice for owners and their shoddy parts (ignition coils etc.).
EDIT: Forgot to add that because of the large numbers and the (relatively) cheap purchase price for the RX8s, we are also incredibly lucky to have so many skilled rotary specialists. There is still a common belief in the US that you simply cannot reliably bridgeport an RX8 engine - which most builders in the UK would laugh at and have bridged Renesis engines pootling about for thousands and thousands of miles.
The UK rotary market is second only to Australia/NZ for expertise and affordability. A decent standard build can be had with a decent warranty for ~£2k - try getting a piston engine rebuilt for that kinda spondoolie

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
That's me told
I also meant running costs, we're the highest or definitely right there for fuel and tax I'm sure, that's a big deciding fact whence a lot when buying here, maybe a lot more would have sporty stuff but simply can't afford it especially at 15odd to a gal and nearly 600 for tax (paying up). Having said that, i know somebody in Ireland that's paying about €1000 for an accord diesel so i guess that makes the tax here look chespish but still crap.

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
Yeah, running costs are pants, but that's a small consideration in the wider picture I think.
If you're buying the RX8 as a high mileage daily, then fair enough. I did it for a while and put ~25k a year on to an 8, it is expensive, but the joys of the 8 are very unique.
Ireland is a law unto itself vehicle tax wise, with some owners having to pay ~€2000 a year for an RX8.
On a run an 8 will do 28mpg, but that is not a common occurrence!

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
Ignoring petrol cost I think there is a common over statement of the running costs, I don't find it partially excessive. I think many people here lump in the various upgrade costs into the mix in coming to that conclusion.
Comparing with my Impreza, the insurance is half of what that was, and the parts costs compare favourably for the RX8 as well (more second hand parts at good prices).
If you just buy and leave as is, especially at the current prices, you're quids in at the moment.

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
Not on mine it wasn't, had one about 10 yrs ago and was ok, just that one of the h/g's blew and if it wasn't for quite a bit of rust underhand holes under it I'd probably have had it a few years...i really liked it and the exhaust note was good, all standard though.

Do people think 8 prices will go the way the prices of the 7 have?
Personally I think it will never happen.

Re: Are RX8 prices finally on the up?
I doubt that as well as they can be silly money now, though mainly for FDs. FBs and FCs (if you can find one - I've been looking for a FC for a while) are still sensible money, think mainly because of the really bad rust issues.
But you never know, rx7 prices where really low a few years ago, but never to the levels of rx8s.
