Brake Calipers OEM Replacement

Post by delta0 »

My calipers are getting towards end of life now, the sliders are particularly corroded. I’m left with the option of rebuilding them or replacing them. I have the option of a Mazda replacement, Blueprint version or something else. I’m intending to keep it OEM with regards to performance changes so I’m not look at a bbk. Ideally I would try and get an aluminium version as they are lighter. Are there any calipers I should be looking at?

I know you said you're not looking at a BBK but honestly i think you should. For me it's a no brainer, much better performance, looks are awesome plus a front BBK is not massive money.

Rotary Revs do kits that can be had for circa 1100 quid ( K Sport ) but at the end of the day it's your call..

If you are after lighter aluminium units which don't break the bank, the set that Adam Galtress is selling are good as they bolt on and use the stock brake discs (they're 4 pot calipers, so kind of a 'medium brake kit' rather than a big brake kit).

Alternatively, I have a fairly good condition set of calipers on my R3 which you'd be welcome to cheap for a set of spares to refurb if you wanted to go down that route, I have a full set front and rear. :thumleft:

Very interesting. Do you have a link to Adam’s?

I will have a think about an original R3 set. I do think Mazda missed an opportunity to make these from aluminium originally to save mass.

You can get them made from an aluminium alloy. From memory they are 2.9 kg's each which is a tad over 2kg's lighter than stock.

I remember reading that on a thread some time ago, give me a few mins and I'll fish it out for you

Got it... It's in ' liams race car project' page 18 onwards, maybe drop him a PM to discuss....

https://freakyparts.co.uk/collections/m ... -brake-kit They are the ones that Adam is selling, and that's the guy who they were bought from in the original group buy. I ran them for a while, they take a great beating, and they look good too.

Adam's sales thread is where he's selling them (and nearly £100 less than RRP ;) ) viewtopic.php?f=146&t=77678

You could also look at a refurbished set of OEM calipers, there are a couple of racing drivers on here who use the OEM brakes because they're more than up to the task. I can supply refurbed units, fire me a PM if you're interested.

Thanks for those. I will investigate. Do these calipers need wheel spacers on the R3?

They do on the standard R3 wheels, yes.

Bummer. I won't swoop in then ;)
Do all the medium/big brake kits you've used so far require spacers with the stock R3 wheels?

Re: Brake Calipers OEM Replacement

Post by Dr. FrankenRex »

It depends entirely on the BBK.

As I understand it the K-sport etc. don't require spacers, the main reason being that the wider calipers are housed further away from the hub (as the disc is a larger diameter) - whereas the 4 pots that Adam is selling are utilising the OEM discs - even with a set of spacers they are cheaper than a full on BBK, though.

My Maserati 6 pots are very similar to the K-sport kit in the sense that I don't require spacers, however the Maserati discs have a thicker bell than the normal BBK, so I actually have a slightly wider track at the front than a normal BBK will give you - so, as normal, I'm the weird one :D

EDIT: All 2-pot, 4-pot and so on calipers are much wider than their single pot brethren :thumleft:
