I'm going to change the oil today, and wondering if an oil pump that goes down the dipstick is ok to use on these engines?
Or is it best to take out the sump plug?

Re: pump or sump?
Whichever way you decide to do it don't forget that a lot of the oil will remain in the oil coolers and pipework leading in and out of them and won't get extracted. A lot of the DIY people on here do an initial change then another after some driving round so the old and new oil get chance to mix and there should be about 50% less unchanged oil left in the engine. I've generally used garages and just done it the once with no issues but food for thought.

Re: pump or sump?
Especially if you've recently received the car and can't be sure what grade of oil is in there or when it was last changed. Then getting as much fresh stuff in there as poss is good.CTID wrote: ↑Mon Sep 17, 2018 9:40 amWhichever way you decide to do it don't forget that a lot of the oil will remain in the oil coolers and pipework leading in and out of them and won't get extracted. Re: pump or sump?
Having just changed my oil cooler lines I can confirm there is a lot of oil that doesn't come out of the sump... It goes everywhere

Re: pump or sump?
You dont need to go crawling on your back, turn the steering wheel to the left, get your socket on a extension (if need be) then reach in from drivers side and undo your sump plug, then to get that little bit of extra oil out just jack it up from the passenger side

Re: pump or sump?
I'm wondering if anyone has ever considered putting a drain plug on the coolers to completely empty them.

Re: pump or sump?
you could tap the banjos and fit a bolt in which you could undo to drain... i considered it, but cant be bothered.

Re: pump or sump?
It's possible to crack open the hose connections to drain the coolers, as Phil proved a while ago, but there's a risk of introducing leaks, as there would be with addition drain plugs. You'd also have to consider the risk of introducing trapped air.
Why bother when the oil is so cheap and a double-change does the job?
