New coils etc...

Post by woolcat »

Morning all

Yesterday I finally changed my coils, leads and plugs after some starting issues last week. Did the battery last week, which seemed to cure that, but thought it was time I stopped putting off doing the rest!

Bought the car almost exactly 5 years ago on 69000 miles. Currently sat on 97500. No idea when the coils were changed before I owned it, so everything was changed on around 72000 in December 2013, and this was the state of the coils last time:

After 25000 miles, this was the state of them when changed yesterday:

Interested to know everyone's thoughts on them? I don't know too much about these things, but they don't appear too bad to me!

Also yesterday I bashed the insides of the cat out so now running it as a decat. Didn't take any pictures of the cat, but seemed pretty much intact so does make me wonder if it was changed at any point before I owned it.

Coils generally need changing at 25ks, so yours are in the ball park. The fact that two have white marks at the bottom points to this being needed.

Might be worth looking at D585s or the Ryan Rotary cheaper coils, as both have lifetime guarantee.

Those large pale areas are caused by the corona effect and in no way indicate failure.

Small bright white spots can be a potential sign of failure, though blistering or swelling of the case is the only true visual indication.

did changing the coils make any difference to starting , mpg or power ?
if not then they may be ok , so I'd keep 'em as spares
