I had spotted these earlier but wasn't sure how credible they were, as they seem to sell the rear quarter panels for an rx-8 too.......

Does anyone have any feedback on how well they are made?

hi in the absence of a response regarding the ebay sill panels ( if its the same as I've seen the supplier is in Poland and advises that the panels are sourced from Mazda), here are my thoughts. RX8 sills will rust, and some people will need or choose to repair /replace them. The outer sills on my RX8 I'm told are soft, and a weld repair will cost £1000 plus VAT max for both sides. The inners sills are an unknown quantity so far. So I would have thought that a manufacturer who could stand behind the parts required here in the UK would be welcomed by those who will need to address this problem in the future. Cost obviously would be a consideration as would longevity. So I would be interested to know more.

A lesson for us all i think, get the cavity wax out before it gets to this stage, with so much access to those areas ,its daft not to.

That looks like it started, or was at least accelerated by incorrect use of a jack or axle stands on the jacking point.

I'm looking for a repair panel for the end of the sill near the rear wheel. Anyone make these? Seems a shame to buy a full sill just to cut the end off.
Have a good time, all the time :thumright:

Re: rusty sills

I've just about finished rebuilding mine. Both rear outer sills were starting to bubble, with the inside sills totally rotten. In the end I cut out the entire inner sill & replaced them. Both the lower outer sills by the front of each rear wheel at the bottom of the arch. I modified the shape of the wheel arch and outer sill so it's a clean run out straight down, rather than the small cavities that collected all the silt over the years.

One of the front foot wells had began rusting too, with various spots all overs the chassis where it was actually rusting underneath the factory seal. Ended up grinding all the original factory seal off, spray priming, undercoating, top coating with good quality stone chip paint, then an extremely generous layer of waxoyl paint.

The rest of the underneath and inside will be filled with waxoyl when I'm finally finished & topped up every year. Had I known the extent of what would happen, I'd have done this the day I bought it 6 years ago. The naievety of a young Man assuming things were still built "proper" ( I own my own engineering business rebuilding steam trains, so am used to things being built to last!!!)

The last thing on the list will be the subframes and chassis above this. But with an engine rebuild required at some point when it finally lets go, I'll probably have this done when the donks out.

Needless to say had I had to pay someone to do it, would easily have been over £1k, so don't let it start!!!

Re: rusty sills

hi Roosterrory,

Thanks for your post. My RX8 has 'bubbling' sills. The corrosion is visible beneath the car and inboard so far. I have a quote to cut out and weld new metal in place once the rusting metal has been removed. When you refer to an inner sill are you describing a sill enclosed by the outer sill?

If the 'inner sill' encloses the outer sill then I expect the cost to replace the rusting parts will rise significantly, hence the question. Likewise if the corrosion is likely to have progressed beyond what is visible to me,then it may be too late to turn things round.

As before thanks for your post!

These look familiar! Go take a look at the P-Shed, I've got very similar levels of rust. My positives are that (so far) a lot of the structual rot is minimal and covering half decent metal, barring the area you've photographed where it's eaten away that section of outer body!

This weekend is crunch day for them (pun hopefully not intended) as I'm going for a full wheels/trim off grind and seal before winter. Hopefully will stick some progress on my thread depending on how depressed I end up getting...

The good news is there are decent shells or knackered cars with broken engines about with no rust on for >£500, which makes swaps a sensible option compared to full repairs.

Have you tried a local classic car/vintage car restorer they usually have the metal working tools to fabricate parts might be worth getting a quote from one of them.

:censored: That sounds terrifying. Hope you were OK.

Please someone buy these sills.

(Maybe add this to the selling forum as well? You may have quick success selling there)

I'm still in denial that my '04, that lives within 100 yards of the Irish Sea, won't be needing replacement sills soon, despite the Waxoyl that I bought 6 years ago still sitting in the cans.

In my defence, it's taken 3 years to get our garage/workshop built and the 2-post lift won't be installed until next month, when I get the car up and see just how bad it is under there :paranoid: :tear: :crybaby:

I've had a PM exchange with m3paf2 and his fire was not related to the fuel tank recall work.

Hey guys, Im from Croatia and Ive been following this thread for quite a while and made the account and waited to post this answer until I was sure. Anyway, my car had some awfully rusted sills and rear fenders, so its undergoing full bodywork restauration as I type, I know some people will say its uneconomical but this particular car is very sentimentally valuable to me and Im planning to never let go of it. Anyway Ive purchased sills and rear fenders from Polish supplier on ebay and guys from the shop said there were no fitment issues or any other problems with them, they are now installed on the car awaiting other fine details being dialed in and painting later. If anyone wants some pictures of how they fit on the car, feel free to contact me via e mail at (removed by Mod) or on instagram (removed by Mod) and Ill send you some as soon as I can, as I cant post pictures here at the moment. All in all they are good and worth a buy! :)
