Re: rusty sills
Hello gents,
So took car in for MOT and it failed because my outer sills are both "rotten". They've said it will require welding and painting. Quote: £350 per side.
Is this right?
Cheers,
Rameez

Re: rusty sills
Depends how bad it is.
Also the price you pay doesn't always mean the quality you get.
But yes something like that can be the right ball park, but see first point.

Re: rusty sills
I'm picking it back up tomorrow so I'll take some pictures. Unfortunately, my front handbrake cable snapped last week and they've just discovered that one of my drop links has snapped in half. Now thinking whether to keep it or just get another (Maybe a White R3).

Re: rusty sills
The handbrake cable can break because it's never been adjusted and, as the lever gets too high, the angle becomes too acute and bends the cable 'til it breaks. Not really the cars fault, just a lack of maintenance.
Alternatively it could break at the back/wheels due to excess corrosion.
The original arb drop links are a very common problem and can break just from general wear'n'tear, hitting a pothole or jacking one wheel high with the other side still on the ground. Fortunately, aftermarket replacement links are plentiful and cheap.
Replacement sill repair panels are now available from a couple of suppliers, see ^^^

Re: rusty sills
Have you bought sills and then complained if they didn't fit? I haven't received any complaints for the countless sills I've sold. Both on here and on facebook. If you're going to chat sh*t about a company at least have the balls to contact them first instead of slanting them.

Was this on Facebook or eBay? Can you pm me your name here and I will check. I have no recollection of receiving such a message. If it was on eBay it's likely not me as I don't sell as rx8fabrications on there.

Re: rusty sills
facebook.
im not looking for any compensation, replacement or anything else. if you want to know what was wrong, take a look at my car thread (it seemed like a good idea at the time) where i detailed the significant fitment issues. my reckoning was that it was made to fit over the existing rusty sill not replace it. i had to increase the bend to the bottom significantly and shorten the distance from the end of the door gap to the retun into the wheelarc by 4mm. which is a lot.

Re: rusty sills
I've just checked my messages and have no record of a complaint. If you could pm me your name I would appreciate it because if there is a fitment issue I need to rectify it. Having had no complaints to date I am surprised you had trouble. Thanks for the responses.

Re: rusty sills
Hi all,
Well it looks like my 04 RX8 231 requires rear inner sills.
I know the outer sills in that area will probably need cutting away too - to assist with the repair.
However - I am not sure whether to go for a full cut off - of the complete sill to make the repairs just both easier and have a better finish plus - piece of mind.
At this point they have not created a hole yet, but they did began to compress as it was jacked up in that area during the MOT.
It is clearly weak there - and I would like to get the vehicle solid before I have each side of the car resprayed to repair arch corrosion concerns also.
I am a retired mechanic of sorts. (Finished with in the trade as an occupation age 42 in 2016 - started my own garden maintenance business instead).
Trained on Fords from age 16. Worked in dealers for Ford, Audi, Toyota, Mazda, Rover, LDV, Citroen, Jaguar & Landrover.
Even worked for the Global Diagnostic Support team in Coventry for Jaguar Land Rover for nearly 4 years.
I remember completing Pre-delivery inspections (PDI) on Mazda RX8 back when they were new in 2004.
However - I will not be completing these repairs myself but overseeing them to be completed at my local garage.
My query is to Shambo who makes these panels I think -
Having the experience you have with repairing these common rusting areas - do you make one piece panels to repair those rear inner sill corners - which my repairer can then use - and cut excess off as required?
And what sort of deal for those two plus the two full length outers?
Or what sort of deal for two rear inners and two half length rear outers?
PM message is fine - but do you have a website more up to date than Facebook RX8 fabs?
Thanks in advance for any advice from Shambo or anyone willing to offer info.

Is Shambo still making sills? I've tried contacting him on facebook and on here with no luck.

Re: rusty sills
I don't think James makes them anymore. I got my outer sills from him no problem, but when I needed the inner ones he didn't respond. A few people have also said they have had no reply from him.

Re: rusty sills
Not sure if he does them anymore as he's started a new job. Might be able to do them again at some point but seems busy atm.
Also it seems his phone doesn't get notifications from the various inboxes etc, for reasons I'm not sure of.
Also I don't think he does inner sills as any welder should be able to fab that up on the spot since they're not visible.
I'll tell him to have a check on his FB Page inbox.

Any updates from shambo/james? I'm new to the forums so my post count is low, so i cant PM him directly. Also as you stated, not replying to facebook messages. I'm in need of both outer sills.
Thanks

Re: rusty sills
Sorry to drag this thread up again, my rex has now succumbed to the rusty inner sills (why they designed them like they did I have no idea.....)
Anyhow has anyone managed to get In contact with shambo? As I know he did offer full length replacement outer sills at one point. I'm doing things properly and will be completely removing the outer ones, to renew the inside sills completely.
However, if shambo doesn't sell them anymore, I may draw some up on CAD & get some profiles made from a firm I use for my own engineering business. Would this interest anyone else?
