Re: R3 won’t start Sorted

Post by Benji200218 »

Hi guys having a similar problem with my r3. I thought it was flooded so went through Mazda procedure in handbook and it started I took it for a decent run then left it for a day. Came back to it this morning and it wouldn't start again I'm just getting clicking when i try to turn it over. I have tried the recommended De flood solutions but no luck all done with jump leads from the Mrs car. When I try to turn it over the lights come on and all other electric bits are on. Any ideas. Thank you in advance Ben

Just clicking means that there's not enough power getting to the starter.

Either the battery isn't charged enough or there's a loose connection; at battery (either connection), main body earth or the fat starter cable

My money is on the battery dying. What's the story with it? How old? Is the weather particularly cold where you are atm? The cold will kill a dying battery very quickly, ask me how I know!!

Get a multimeter on it, a healthy battery will show aroumd 12.6 or above, when she's idling it should be circa 13.5-14.5

It's a 58 with 40k on it. Only had it for 2 weeks, only driving it at weekends. I have a horrible feeling I might of left an interior light on. It's just above freezing most nights at the moment

:whathesaid: (Kopite72,re changing the battery)

Since we're entering winter, and if your car is a daily driver then a new battery would make sense regardless.. ;)

The battery of choice on here

Might be worth checking the the new one with a multimeter before you fit it. In case it's been sat in storage for a long time (vendors are supposed to check them but don't always). Might benefit from a little trickle top up indoors before fitting and first crank.

See Warpc0il's thread on saving the battery and try everything you can. If all fails, new battery time. You can usually save them tho. But even jumping from a donor battery try letting it charge for at least 15 mins before you attempt to crank and run the donor car engine once the leads are connected.

Also check for visible damage on the battery. I recently had to replace mine because the positive post was cracked all the way down and was bubbling over when very hot, so the charge fell (not to mention it seeming dangerous).

(Sorry for the double post chaps)

Little update. I have had a multimeter on the battery and it has come back with a reading of 11.36. I've had it on jump leads for over and hour and managed to get it to 11.65. I am going to get a new battery. Any advise on the best one to buy. 58 reg R3. Cheers Ben

If it's been left uncharged for too long then it will have become permanently damaged, such that it's no longer good at holding a charge, especially in cold weather. This is true for the top brands as much as the cheap batteries.

Sometimes the performance can improve after a few charge/discharge cycles but it's never going to be as good as a battery that has been properly maintained.

Either that or it's just giving-up since you've let your OC membership lapse and it thinks that you don't care any more :crybaby: [-X

I've got one of those solar chargers now for my track/thrash car as it probably won't be used much over winter.
