A suggestion (which I did when changing the cat, and will employ when I do the oil on mine). If you have some ramps, you can jack the front of the car up so you can get the ramps under the front wheels. Then lower the car onto the ramps.

Then jack up the rear of the car (also with appropriately positioned axle stands) so the car is level.

This will give you a bit more room to get under the car.
Make it idiot proof, and someone will build a better idiot

I reversed on to the ramps then jacked-up the front and supported with axle stands.

Was thinking of doing it the other way around but;
- my ramps are quite steep and the front bodywork would touch before the wheels.
- with a RWD car it's better to reverse on the ramps as the driven wheels pull themselves up and don't try and push the ramps away as you ascend.

I used a long spirit level on the lower door shuts to confirm it was level.

i have my 6th service coming up. having spoken to the tdealer he mentioned 85/90 for the diff oil?

anyhow, having a look on Opie's site, using the "recommend a product for my car" feature, i am given two choices.

Silkolene BOA 90 LS High Performance Gear And Limited Slip Differential Oil
OR
Motul 90 PA Lubricant limited slip differential (LSD) Extreme pressure

anyone tried any of these. any recommendations. i dont think it makes any difference but it's a 192 version i have (yes, the torqueier one).
should i just be looking for standard, i.e. GL4, or GL5 instead of 75/90 or 85/90 a bit like brake fluids where you just go for DOT ratings?

It should be GL5 and SAE90 according to mazda specs. I was looking at this last night, funnily enough...

I'll be getting the silkolene silktran 75/90 from opie

^^^^^ What Ian said and just had both diff and gear oil changed today at Romford Mazda using Opie's Silktran 5 Race 75w-90. :thumleft: The new owners seem to have upped their act since last I visited (under the previous ownership)
Now a distant memory unfortunately.

why doesn't opie show this as recommended for the diff when you search for products for your car? is it because it is fully synthetic and mazda recommend mineral?

plus the syntran is showing as a gear oil, which i agree can be used in a diff also. however, the Motul 90 is actually showing as a "lubricant limited slip diff extreme pressure", so this should be better as it's specific to diff's no?

There's no mineral vs synthetic issue for the gearbox, only the engine as it burns it's oil.

Also a question for Opie - they are probably using a commercially available car to product mapping database. BTW there now seems to be a product name change - its now Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 as well.

So long as the oil meets the spec then it should be OK for gearboxes. If the Motul doesn't meet GL4 then it isn't suitable for gearboxes. Any other choice is based on experience or personal preference/colour of the box/how pretty the girl is selling it to you...

@ Hypo - spoken with opie and they do in fact use a standard lookup chart. the Syn 5 is the better product which they used in their own RX8.

ordering some now.

Does anyone know the size of washers required for replacing those on the diff? Also the gearbox, since I'm here

When I did the first oil check on mine years ago I searched and a quote from OZ was that there wasn't an equivalent from any of the standard suppliers.
As it's designed to give then I don't take the risk and just get the dealer to order half a dozen Y601-17-361

Yeah... I found that page while searching as well. I haven't needed the gearbox crush washers, but suspect I will sooner or later. They don't go back on the car very well once they've been "crushed". You can get the 9956-41-800 washer through the mx5 parts store at about 33p each. I've also got the 23mm/24mm sockets on order so I can take everything apart and then put it back together.

Starting with the fill plug... :D

If you're coming up to the Grange for the Essex meet, I'll bring my gearbox/diff re-filler kit which makes it easy to get the oil in cleanly with just a cordless drill.

changed gearbox oil today, theres more room to invert the oil pack than when doing the diff, but its still quite tight. and had to jack the car up three times. to drain, fill, drain, tighten :(

oh well thats that for a few 10s of thousands of miles anyway
