This is exactly why its worth joining an owners club like this because people will try and con you all the time [-X , i,d say buy a couple of the owners club stickers from the club shop for the back windows of your rex, this should act as a good deterant to dealers who try and pull the wool over your eyes in future

just a quick 1 guys as wanted to order some oil from opie now to take advantage of the free delivery offer before tomora :D , and just wanted to clarify, engine oil 5ltrs of fusch,s titan xtr and gearbox oil for the 231 6speed, was gunna go for the mobilube shc fully synthetic but the opie site recommends fusch,s semi synth and i,ve read on here that you guys are saying go full synthetic, i was going to buy 3 lts of the shc mobilube 75w 90 to sort the gearbox and diff.
could someone please just put my mind at ease on this, thanks in advance :)

Just carried this out on my '54 192 5 speeder, thanks for the guide.

There are two filler plugs, it would appear that the front hole is the one you stick your tube in and the rear hole is only supposed to have stuff come out of it.

er, I might rephrase that

If you put 2.5 litres of oil in, it will start to overflow from the rear most level plug. At this point, if you put your little finger in the front filler hole and wiggle it, you can feel that the oil is nowhere near overflowing from there. My money's on the higher one being the filler plug and the lower one being the level plug.
Pete.
Sold up, but did have fun with a 192, leather, sat-nav, crest, strakes, grilles, Toyo 'zorst, 6 speed 'box, anthracite wheels, bonnet struts, K&N, debadged boot.

Apologies if this is repeated info.

The rearmost plug on the 5 speeder is the level plug, you can fill from the front plug until it overflows from the rear.

The mentioned small quantity of oil in the selector mechanism should only ever need to be changed or refilled if the gearbox has been apart - it won't drain with the gearbox oil.

From my experience, change the diff oil at the same time. If the 'box oil needs a change, so will the diff.

Are new washers required for both fill and drain plugs on a 6 speed box? Are they the same or have different part numbers? Also what about for the diff?

Its best to replace both and they are exactly the same just remeber that when draining the oil it shoots out sideways and down so have a decent sized bowl to catch it all in and make sure you can get the new stuff in again.

I know this thread is for gearbox oil, but if doing the diff oil don't remove the filler plug while draining - then the oil comes out nice and slow and is a lot easier to catch.

I would always remove the fill plug before the drain. What happens if you drain all your oil out and later find out that the fill plug is jammed??

ady wrote:When you refill feed a short length of hose from the engine bay to the filler hole put a funnel in the top and you can fill from there. I have not don the gearbox oil on my RX8 yet but have found on other cars that this can be done with the car on its wheels so that you can get the right level, although whats in the hose when you reach the top will still P*** out so have a tray ready for this.
Having just changed the gearbox and diff oil I can vouch for the hoze and funnel method. I'd previously used it on my MX-5; I used half-inch clear tube from B&Q (so you can see the oil flowing) and positioned the funnel above the oil filter for the gearbox and fed the tube out of the wheel arch for the diff. Warming the tube with a hot air gun helped get the funnel in the tube. I also put a 30mm lenght of 15mm copper tubing in the other end so that it fits nicely in the fill holes.

Just had the gearbox oil replaced by the dealer as part of my 5th year service, using the oil I supplied. I was surprised to get back left over oil in one of the bottles with 500ml still in it.

Does the 6-speed transmission not require 1.75 litres for a change? :-k Should I be worried they haven't filled it properly? Seemed perfectly okay on the drive home.

Yes mine was just under 2 litres which I used. I don't know maybe they didn't drain it all out fully. This is why I like to do my own servicing. You can never be sure of how well someone else has done the job unless you do it yourself. Especially franchised Mazda dealers who's main target is to sell you stuff and collect their bonus.

Did mine today up on the lift and it was just under 2 quarts so about 1.7 litres for the 6 speed.

Just a further helpful hint to add to this already useful article - for those worried about beating gravity and getting the new oil in - Laser multipurpose pumps are available on ebay for about £15. It makes getting liquid into the diff and gearbox very easy.
