HypoThermia wrote:Yeah... I found that page while searching as well. I haven't needed the gearbox crush washers, but suspect I will sooner or later. They don't go back on the car very well once they've been "crushed". You can get the 9956-41-800 washer through the mx5 parts store at about 33p each. I've also got the 23mm/24mm sockets on order so I can take everything apart and then put it back together.
Starting with the fill plug...

Is it the 14mm or the 18mm internal diameter washer i need for the 192 gearbox.
Also same question for the fill and drain on the diff.

out of interest, what did everyones oil look like? mine was black but in a thin stream (when pouring out) it was still relatively straw coloured. i cant imagine that its been done before as theres no mention of it..
When I did mine a couple of weeks ago I used Redline so had 2 quarts of the stuff ready. 1 quart = 0.94 ltr. Car was on a lift and level. Took both without appearing to reach the fill level. Quickly googled on my phone to see where I was going wrong and found that the US owners club reckon 2.04 qts. That about 2 Ltrs. Anyway, put the plug back and had to assume there was sufficient in there.
Echo the comments about tricky access. I eventually made a pump from an old workshop soap dispenser but a real PITA.
Is smoother and quieter with the MT90.

Yea I only used two bottles and noticed it wasn't full have you purchased another since
No mate. The capacity in quarts was shown as 2.04 so I figured it must be just about full with 2. Always nice when it dribbles out so you KNOW it's full tho'.

Hi I'm planning on changing my oil next week and have read through this thread but can't find the Torx size for the 5 speed box...can someone help please?

Yeah ive done my gearbox today its a 5minute job. Empty the oil oil "it looks almost black n gludgy" anyway with just over a meter of hose pipe and a funnel out through the wheel arch 'passenger side' slide the other end in the gearbox filler hole, add a chopped down pop bottle under the area 'if theres a spil' drop the car onto the ground, with the jack then pour away "the oil was in a tub of hot water to help it along the way"
Once the measured amount of oil was in "car still on the ground I reached in with me little finger felt the oil thru the filler hole "job done"
Just over 1:75l of oil job done.
Ive rested the hose onto the top of the starter motor to keep the oil to run down hill into the gearbox "dead easy" very similar to the pics above only thru the wheel arch "wheel still attached"
Im planning on the diff oil change soon "how much is needed for that?????'
But ive afew project mods to plan and prep for the time bringing

Just read through this complete thread and it's a great guide, thanks to all involved. But, I have a 192 55plate automatic, does anyone know if any aspect of the process differs because of this?
Thanks in advance.

YES, totally different.
Go to an automatic gearbox specialist to get it done, they can also change the filter.

Hi, Thanks for the response, does this mean it's not a do-able DIY job then?

Should be easy to change it with a Pela extractor. What sort of diameter is the dipstick tube?

There is, in the service manual The standard way is to drop the gearbox sump - not a massive issue. I use the Pela to extract the oil from the autobox on my Elgrand. Just suck it right up through the dipstick tube, then refill it with a funnel. Easy peasy!

Thanks guys,
Pela Extractor now ordered and 10 Litres (to cover the 8.7 litres that it needs!!!!) of ATF. I'll give it a bash and if not, there's no real issue in taking a sump off, I have access to inspection ramps any Sunday at my mate's garage and all of his tools plus his oil disposal system thankfully.
If that doesn't work, then Autobox specialist it is.

So what is the size spanner needed to remove the filler/draining nuts? Is it 23mm or 24mm? I want to do this to my PZ asap but so far I have read that the size is 21mm,23mm and 24mm. These are big ar*e spanners which I need to know I own before starting the job.
Thanks.

Did mine the other weekend. I distinctly remember that the fill plug on the diff was 23mm and the drain plug is 24mm.
Gearbox - I think was 24mm for both (90% certain), but it might have been 23mm!
You want 18x24 crush washers afterwards.
(Late response due to me spotting the thread and realising I now knew the answers!)
EDIT: Just spotted the information is in this thread!

If you have the 6 speed box you need a 24 m/m metric socket for the 2 plugs and you should fit new sealing washers to the plugs (available from your dealer)
