subframe rust how to treat
hi all, my car recently had mot and am advisory of slight corrosion on rear underneath I'm assuming it's the sub frame as I can only see rust along that, could any advise best method to sort this, would it be a wire wheel on dremmel?,to rub the rust down,
Also if any one can advise what to you to treat this so hopefully doesn't return.
Many thanks

Re: subframe rust how to treat
Wire brush followed by Frost Automotive POR 15 - neutralises rust and gives a glossy black finish

Re: subframe rust how to treat
Which product does that? Por 15 metal prep? Also can it just be sprayed across the underside of the car?

Re: subframe rust how to treat
I was looking at the metal prep on there and it looks like a good starter for getting on top of the rust. It appears to be a rust converter. Should be able to spray that across the underbody and then go from there with further protection.SeeJay wrote: ↑Mon May 28, 2018 7:38 pmIt's usually applied by brush..that's how I've always done it

Frost products aren't cheap, but if restorers of valuable, classic concours cars swear by it - and they do - then it's good enough for a bit of Japanese tin

Re: subframe rust how to treat
Make sure you also spray inside the subframe and any other chassis box sections you can access, especially the sills.

Re: subframe rust how to treat
are the subframes just bare steel? that rust is worse than my fiat of twice that age!
unless you remove the subframe, whatever you do will only hide the problem or slow it down at best.

Re: subframe rust how to treat
hi daz,do you have access to a big compressor?if so you may find this tool useful for shifting flakey rust on heavy items ie subframe and sus arms.just need to be careful around bushes and brake lines.worked a treat on mine and left surfaces ready for paint prep.rob.

That's much easier on the car than a needle gun, very expensive though

Re: subframe rust how to treat
Is there a place around London/Herts that one would actually trust with treating the underbody of an RX8? I'm kind of considering it as the big project for next year (car's gonna sleep through the winter), there are garages for rent on a daily rate with a lift, I have wire brush for a drill that did a good job cleaning up brake calipers and neither acf50 nor Hammerite Kurust and Underbody Seal are really that expensive...but
1. I doubt I'd be able to cover everything properly and doing it half-arsed might do more damage than good
2. I'm not sure what to do with bolts, nuts, lines, etc, take those apart or just coat them
So if it's not stupid expensive I'd rather leave it to the pros but don't know if it's just any car body shop, if it's a relatively easy and common for garages to do or if there are certain people that come recommended?
