Tow Hook Ring & Seat Belt Colour Change

Post by Yie »

Hello All,

I don't know why I'm slightly obsessed with the idea of a racing style Tow Hook from my understanding the threads need to be 20 x 2.5 but I cannot find one they all seem to be 16mm or 18mm.

Does anyone know where I can get one?

While I'm here I'd also like to get the colour of my seat belts changed has anybody done this or know where to get it done?

Looking to go for White/Black & Red Theme with my car. Red seat belts to match the R3 Red stitching etc.

Thanks!

Thanks,
I did see these guys, have you experience with them? I also saw QuickfitSBS as they're a little bit closer.

I've not used them myself but they did a great set of belts for my mates E-Type and he was put on to them by a mutual friend who had some custom belts made for his wheelchair adapted car.

Probably not the cheapest but not something that you'd want a budget option.

Do you want a Tow Hook for looks or do you plan on taking the car on Track :?:

There are plenty of cheap ones on eBay Phil as long as you not planning on using them for Towing your car out of something etc... :!:

Unable to find a 20mm one even on eBay. Well if I ever get brave enough to go on the track would be good to have! But yeah predominantly looks.

My Two Hooks are Heavy Duty ones so as I can be towed off the Track if need be, but there again the price reflects that option :thumright:

Where did you get them? I'd be keen to see if they have a size to fit the 8.

When I looked into this there wasn't much around. The only option I found in the correct thread size was from Japan. I can't remember exactly who, but someone like RE-Amemiya does them. You might have to trawl the Japanese language sites to find it. You could try pm-ing TMK on here, because I think he may have one.

I'm considering buying some from Alibaba, but they do larger quantities. Happy to organise for other members to get in on the action.

These are chinese ones made from steel rod and an aluminium folding ring (AL6061-T6). Not sure if these would be functional or just for show, although the company claims they're good for up to 1.5 tonnes

Given the price they will be on there It might be worth a punt? Can get a couple if one breaks no biggie whip another one on. Or is some little Herbert nicks it it's not the end of the world! As I'd like to leave it on permanently.

I remember seeing he accumulated enough loyalty points for one from either RE-Amemiya or another Juicy JDM vendor.

I remember going through his project thread thinking I wish I had a White S2/R3 they're so gorgeous!

Yeah, I'll be leaving mine on permanently also. My only concern is that I track my car and if it fails when I'm being towed out of the tyre wall then that's the time I want it to work!

I'm waiting on a quote, but when I get an answer I'll see about setting up a group buy. Think min order is 10 currently, so will see how much interest. Worst case scenario I'll flog them on eBay and facebook for MILLIONS OF DOLLARS! MUHUHAHAHAHA

Well should you actually need pulling there is a hole the other side so can just put the OG Mazda one, that will be up to the task of pulling just not looking so pretty ;)

Mine came from Taiwan and were about £35 each but would of been a lot dearer from a UK Distributor at the time :!:

I'd be interested depending on the price and whether or not they are robust enough to pull me out of the gravel.

Given the lack of fatigue through heat cycles, I can't see why they wouldn't be strong enough, personally.

The weakest point will be where the aluminium 'eye' is screwed on to the steel shaft, but I still can't see it not being strong enough to pull a car out of a gravel trap. Maybe you'd want to replace them as a 'single use in anger' kinda thing I don't know.

Obviously won't know until I get a few and potentially break a few...

@PeteH what's your thoughts based on the grade of ally used?

6061-t6 has a yield strength of about 275N/mm^2, which is OK for aluminium (although much less than steel). I have estimated that the minimum cross-sectional area is about 80mm^2, where the pivot bolt goes through the aluminium. So my guess is that the failure mode will be that the aluminium loop would break away from the pivot bolt. The calcs say this would happen at 2.25 tonnes, so the manufacturer's specification of 1.5 tonnes seems reasonable.

This load is sufficient to tow an RX-8 on the road perfectly safely. But any kind of "snap" or "jerk" recovery will certainly break it. I do not think it is sufficient to get you out of a deep gravel trap. If I had a track day car I might risk it (particularly if I had a Mazda steel one in the boot as a backup). But for any serious competition you will be wanting a steel loop of some kind. The FIA is now mandating steel wire loops, with minimum dimensions.

Hope this helps.

Based on the fact I'll always have the steel jobber in the boot I think I'll use this for track days. I don't do all that many so I'll take a chance me thinks.

Well dependant on pricing I'll take a couple, I'm sure they will shift. My only conditions are that it's the anodised red not the painted red I'm not fussy :^o

The ones I'm looking at are anodised and come in Red, Blue, Black, Green and Silver :thumleft:

Based on my guesstimation I reckon they'll be £10 or less per unit delivered. But that is a complete guess.

This looks like the way I'll go then. I'm not interested in them looking nice if I'm honest, just functional.
