Any pictures?Dr. FrankenRex wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2018 4:21 pmThe ones I'm looking at are anodised and come in Red, Blue, Black, Green and Silver
Based on my guesstimation I reckon they'll be £10 or less per unit delivered. But that is a complete guess.

I guess you didn't see me at the last meet trying to pull them off then ? You've gone very stealth, I like it!
I'll probably have to paint the Silver Black, given I will be de-chroming the car soon. Not sure I'm brave enough to do the Headlights on an S2 though.

That is pretty much what they look like, just a slightly different diameter
When I get the quote back I'll work out how the numbers divide down and set up a group buy thread as there seems to be enough interest to make it worthwhile! I shall also confirm what colours they do
And @Yie I have a friend who opens them, paints them and sends them back, he did my headlights:

Well I'd much rather remove myself from the equation of breaking them as the R3 ones are harder to find and more expensive. I love the look almost Spirit R, Depending on the turn around time I'd quite like to get them done Dan. One thing to bare in mind is the length of these before the hook eye part. The R3 front bumper sticks out abit.

Anyone know implications of having on car permanently and if one hit someone and the tow eye did more damage to them?
Just a thought.

Re: Tow Hook Ring & Seat Belt Colour Change
I'm 99% certain that it's not strictly legal to leave these fitted when driving on the road, if they extend beyond the limits of the bodywork. For the same reason, it's perfectly legal to remove your bumpers, but you have to remove any bumper brackets and anything else that is sharp or protrudes. I think the law is defined in terms of the "minimum radius" of anything that sticks out. If you take a kit car for SVA testing they will go over the exterior with a 100mm sphere, and anything that touches the sphere will need to be blunt (meaning a greater than 2.5mm radius) and pose no threat to pedestrians. I suspect the police would use the same test to establish if your tow hook means your car is no longer safe, as defined in the "Constructions and Use" guidelines. A tow hook or lashing eye will usually fail this test.

Re: Tow Hook Ring & Seat Belt Colour Change
Not only would the tow hook do more damage to anything that you hit (car or pedestrian) but it would also reduce the effectiveness of the crash protection for you and your passengers.
In most cases the crash protection impact (sic) would be limited as it would just punch a hole in whatever you hit, unless that was a concrete block or a truck chassis rail, in which case the energy that would normally be absorbed by the bumper would be transmitted directly to the crumple zone, causing enough damage to write-off the car and increase the impact acceleration of the occupants - neither of which is "a good thing".

My car passed 2 mot's with them fitted front and rear at 2 different mot places too. Surely it should have failed both if it wasn't legal/safe to have them on there.

Re: Tow Hook Ring & Seat Belt Colour Change
Ah, but just because it passes an MOT test, doesn't mean it's fully road legal - merely that it was road legal when newly sold, and it's now considered safe. The IVA test would be the one to try and get through.

Re: Tow Hook Ring & Seat Belt Colour Change
i really like coloured seatbelts. have them in one of our other cars. though you do have to do research on the safety i'd say don't buy anything cheap and cheerful from ebay, find someone who has a company colouring them and making them to uk safety specs. we have burgundy ones in our MGZS, they just look so different its just a nice little extra style point especially if you have a dark interior. i think anyways.

Re: Tow Hook Ring & Seat Belt Colour Change
Thread necro time!
Dan, did you make and progress on that folding tow hook?
I want to sort something soon, before the next track season starts as my bumper inserts for the OEM ones are nearly shot.
Nigel sent me a link to his and they are lovely. But obviously only fit the GT86 and the seller doesn't supply an RX8 version.
A friend is willing to make me a front and rear out of stainless steel, rather than aluminium. And still have it look like the hooks featured in this thread including the folding head. The idea here is track functionality over looking bitchin' at car shows tho.
Does anyone know the thread size on the R3 tow hook? I have the hook but don't know how to calculate the thread size. Given that some aftermarket S1 tow hooks are too short for the R3 I don't want to make any assumptions about S1 and R3 threads being the same.
I'm debating whether to have the entire tow hook fabricated, or have the front hook section made and then welded to a cheap S1 threaded end.
Also let me know if any of you is also interested in having a steel set made. I'm going to my friends workshop to plan the design next week.

If you've got a bolt then measuring the size is easy.
I could explain but they've already done the work...

The people I were talking to were hopeless at replying, and then I moved house, had an engine rebuild and all manner of things, so haven't done anything with it, sorry!
If you do manage to find someone who could get something fabricated I would indeed be interested in such an addition! Cost dependent obviously
