Uncalibrated, the devices high on a bridge would read slightly fast
I disagree. They will read slow, recording the component of the velocity vector along the line of sight (velocity x cosine of subtended angle).
Take the extreme example of the car underneath the bridge. The gun faces straight down and measures 0 mph towards it, which is reading low.

This is getting weird as I'd original written "Uncalibrated, the devices high on a bridge would read slightly slow" as that's what my gut told me.
I then got that crazy Greek in my head and the maths said that the hypotenuse was longer, so to get there in the same time, you'd have to be going faster.
Of course, while the speed gun is looking along the hypotenuse, you're still travelling along the base...
The DoE may be politically incorrect but he doesn't talk nonsense. He doesn't suffer fools gladly, that is true, but his views are always sensible and the vast majority of his 'gaffes' are manufactured by the media's taking his comments out of context.

I asked a friendly police officer how the speed on his GPS compared to the speed on his calibrated speedo and he said it seemed to read 3mph faster at all speeds. So it seems the GPS was very accurate but was set to error 3mph faster to help protect the unwary motorist.
I got caught by one the other day first ever speeding ticket... d'oh
Dual carriageway goes from 70 to 50 for no reason that no-one ever pays attention to... Luckily I was in Beth's golf so got caught at 60 rather than the speed I would be doing in my car lol

Anybody tried the Tom Tom Speed camera app?
Just put it on phone I'll feed back in a few days...
Yes, I use the TomTom GO app on my iPhone and it is excellent for fixed cameras but patchy for mobile units. A very useful feature is the average speed indicator for road works on motorways and the GPS speed reading too.

Totally agree but everyone has done it whether intentionally or not.
FREE! I paid for a 3 year subscription for TomTom Go! Are you referring to the feature on an actual TomTom device?

There is a great (Free!) Sat Nav app on Android & iOS called "Waze" that allows its users to report speed traps and police vans etc... Of course, this is reliant on at least one user making a report, and them being accurate, so it couldn't be relied upon for every trap or in rural locations, but in busy areas, like A roads and large towns it is VERY handy, as the updates are basically real time.
Highly recommended, as the more users the better.
