Which disc brakes have you fitted?
Hi,
As my caliper decided to stick and warp my offside front disc I'll need to replace the front discs shortly. There appear to be lots to choose from from the likes of mtec, mintec, ebc, diamond black etc etc. I'll probably go for slotted discs as I've used those to good effect before, and going to avoid drilled as I have had fractures in ones . So the only question is which manufacture/type?
So I thought it would be interesting to see what discs people have fitted, and maybe why.
Cheers,
Jon

Yup BD here too, bought them from MRP over two years ago and they are still doing what they should. Mines my daily so they have done circa 20K. Btw mine are drilled and grooved and I've had zero issues

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
I use MTEC black painted grooved and drilled discs. They look identical to the Black Diamond black painted ones, but are less than half the price. Bought for £200 from the MTEC eBay shop (not their website) for a set of 4 including 4 Brembo pads. Silly money.
I was hesitant, not having used MTEC before, but my neighbour who's a suspension specialist swears by them and I'm very glad I trusted his experience.
MTEC offer a variety of styles/groove depending on preference.

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
Evora grooved from Brake Depot. They have been perfect for two years of racing. On a road car you'd want to get some corrosion protection on them. The most impressive thing is that they have almost zero wear, even after going through about six sets of pads.

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
It's always going to be a personal opinion however there's plenty of input so far and it's also nice when people have actually used what they're recommending. (this is why I only suggest or not suggest what I have used) I've had the Brake Depot as mentioned above I got the 40 grove and tbh they where very good especially for the money, I used them with ebc red stuff pads on the road they where noticeably better then what came on the car and worked very well, however while on track I found they over heated pretty quickly. I think my driving style and the fact that red stuff aren't actually for track was the main problem. If I didn't go on track then I would use them again as the dust off them is very low. I now run a BBK (k-sport 8 pots) now with yellow stuff pads it's excellent now and overheating is never an issue now. On my lady's 8 I fitted the ebc grooved (black) disks and yellow stuff pads they're very good on road and track and are an excellent option on a reasonable budget and what I would probably suggest for most.
Brilliant black 192.

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
I use the same and I'm very pleased with them. When you say "corrosion protection" are you referring to a product type or just some paint?
Mine rust up while I'm in the car wash, it's insane how fast they go brown.

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
The swept area will always rust (discolour) very quickly.
It's the area inside and outside that can benefit from rust protective paint - though it has to be VHT - very high temperature.
Some brands come already coated with a corrosion resistive layer that is worn off the swept area during the breaking-in period but remains on the unswept areas.
Stainless Steel can be used for brake discs but it's much more expensive, doesn't wear as well or give the consistent braking performance of (what is basically) cast iron.

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
I don't care about the wearing surfaces, but on these discs none of the disc is protected at all. It would be better to get some UHT milk paint onto them. I don't care on my track car, but I would on a road car.
Ps. In the 70s and 80s stainless discs were quite common on motorbikes. Unfortunately in the wet they had almost zero friction. Proper brakes use rust-prone iron.
Er, if I just waited for Dave I could save myself some typing!

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
stainless brake disks are still very common on bikes. this is a (BENT) set off of a 2005 Yamaha R6
(and yes i do still have them kicking about in my office, even though i took them off the bike 10 years ago... and sold said bike 5 years ago..)

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
OEM-spec discs from MRP have been doing the job for me over the last 2 years and 10k miles. Absolutely no concerns with fast road or track usage, and performance has been excellent. Better to ensure the calipers are working at their best before fitting whatever discs you choose to buy though

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
As long as you avoid cheap discs then your choice is much less of an influence as the choice of pads.
Grooved discs are better than plain discs as they clean up pads and dispel gasses and water better. The gas issue is much less of an issue than it used to be though due to the make-up of more modern pads.
Avoid drilled discs except from quality manufacturers. The holes really need to be shaped and the gain for normal users is offset by the risk of cracking.
Grooves and holes do wear pads quicker though.

I had Evora swirl discs on mine and they were perfect as PeteH said - although mine didn't take anywhere near as much punishment as his!
I'm now running Maserati discs, which I have to say don't seem to last as long!

Re: Which disc brakes have you fitted?
So i couldn't easily get DBA for the RX8. So I fitted mintex discs which look like OEM, no grooves, no holes, fairly cheap but from a known brand. I then found mintex m1155 pads because the ferodo ds2500 or ds3000's are not available.
So far after 9 months and 4 track days, they have been good. No fade on track and work well no matter the UK weather. Wear on the pads is high, they are about 40% used. Discs will likely last 3 sets of pads.
