Replacement Keyfob needed

Post by njkmr »

Guys,
having recently bought my RX 8 it only came with one key.
Pricing a new one up with Mazda was an eye opener to say the least.
Priced separately of course because you cant just by A key....
Blade £77
Fob £151
Code the key £45
Obligatory VAT on top...!
Now I really don't want to spend over £300 on a key so is there another way of sourcing a key , maybe second hand and get a blade cut to match my ignition etc and then get it recoded to suit my original key for switching alarm off ,locking unlocking etc?
Please advise if anybody knows how I can avoid having my pants pulled down...
Many Thanks

Umm see what your saying but I need another key fob as spare ,rather than just changing to switchblade.
The key I have now is the switchblade type, I just want another one for spare.?

If you have one switch blade you could look to buy another switchblade 2nd hand...eBay or traders on here.
You'd then need a blank blade for it and to get it cut.
I got this off ebay but had difficulty getting someone to cut it.. Wrong metal apparently.
A quick search will give you the instructions on how to add the new fob to the cars ecu. There is a video online on how to do it, pretty straight forward and doesn't need tools.

Was looking on ebay but did not want to buy one before finding out if it can be made to work for my car.

BigPete, does that mean that the chip in the key doesn't link to any immobiliser?

Adding an additional key/fob to those trusted by the car requires you to already have two trusted keys to hand. This is to prevent an authorised person from adding.

As you only have one key you will have to get a Mazda Dealer to add an additional key.

There are a number of fairly new members contributing to this thread, and none of the older members have chipped in yet with the following link:

http://www.projectrx8.co.uk/page.php?9

Project RX8 was always the "go to" place for any key questions. I assume that is still the case, and I assume that all of these questions can be answered with one phone call....

(I'm not sure, but isn't this company run by an ex-member called SteveD?)

I may be wrong but dont think that wasn't the case on my 2007...
I did have 1 Fob and Valet key, but that was in the house about 30 feet from the car when I added mine.

I only had one key on my RX8 and created a new one using a piece of free software called forscan and an obd2 reader, I also deleted the previous keys that were in the cars memory just to be safe.

Update.
I have ordered the blade and a guy is cutting it for me off a picture of the original key I have sent him. How he does that I don't know?
But he has found the code for the key blade from the picture , so I just need to find the remote now I think, which the same guy has one, which may be ok for me.
But it will need programming .

Re: Replacement Keyfob needed

To conclude guys and help anyone Oooop North in the same predicament I found myself in.
Phoned a couple of the Traders on this forum and was put in touch with a guy in Warrington called Jim at www.carkeys4 u.co.uk .
I sent him a picture of my key and he found the code for it and cut me the new blade for £12.
I asked if he had a fob and he did have a second hand one in good condition which he gave me for £25.
He then said he would come over from Warrington to my home to code the key for me for £65.
So all done I got a newish key for £102, which is much better than going to Mazda and paying nearer £300 for a key.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Rob.
And thanks for the leads guys .

Exactly this.

You can code keys to your car (if you only have 1) using forscan - this software is FOC (but suggest you donate if it helps, you will also need a half decent OBD cable). The transponder chip thingy in the key are one time use iirc - but you can buy new ones for a fiver on ebay etc. Depending on your key type (typically visteon) iirc it's a 4d63 chipset. Then you're good to go.
I'd recommend getting a key cut with a blank chip already sorted and ready to be programmed.

A few years ago you'd have to pay a bit of money for an auto locksmith with some expensive kit, but now it's all possible yourself with a few online tools and a bit of knowledge/research.

You can add a fob that will unlock your doors without a second key, but to add a key that will actually start your car you need two existing keys!

I got a couple of remote key fobs from ebay. Programmed them to unlock doors etc.
Then got a local locksmith that does cars to cut and code new blades.
Around £80.

I had two existing keys (one Valet)
Bought second hand one off eBay and new case with blank blade.
Timpsons wouldnt cut it but a local indie did it
All in less than 40 spent.
However it's taken me over a year to get it to a point where it actually works fully. 😁

Added fob to car and thought it was all fine till tried to start with key months later.
Read up and found I had used the switch blade head off new key with no transponder.
Only found I hadn't thrown out the 2nd hand ones switchblade head the other day so added that to car using the two key method and now key fully works.

The grey valet key works everything except the glovebox and boot, which catches a few people out.

Maybe so, but the locksmiths are still relevant, not everyone will be able to do the work with the help of Internet instructions. And at the same time, the responsibility for the repair is removed from ourselves.I now have a trusted locksmith http://directory.somersetlive.co.uk/com ... 3307010048, to whom I regularly turn for help.

Re: Replacement Keyfob needed

Post by FishmanR3 »

hey guys, Sorry to bump an older thread but I'm really struggling with an answer....

I've foolishly driven over my RX8 keyfob whilst moving house and crushed it to the point its not usable....doesnt light up or omit any signal, have tried changing battery. i only have the one key (which fortunately still works fine, it's just the remote fob thats dead) but the alarm constantly going off and the footwell lights staying on because of said alarm, have drained my battery down almost flat. Now every time i try to charge the battery i get to a point where the alarm kicks back in and the cycle continues.

Having trawled this forum and PH I'm thinking the best plan of action is to get a replacement fob and code that to the car ( i know i wont be able to code the actual key with just 1 existing key, and am not bothered about that i just want the fob to shut the alarm off) in order to shut off the alarm so the car can charge and i can have use of my baby again!

Problem: my key fob is a Visteon 41585..... which it seems is the rocking horse sh*t of key fobs.

Questions:

A) - does anyone know where i can get a Visteon 41585 replacement fob - Google has taken me to one dodgy looking Polish site.
A/2) - Even if i do find a replacement, is the car going to let me programme a new fob whilst it's stuck in the alarm cycle?
B) - If i can't get a 41585, does anyone know if the more common 41788 or 41844 fobs will programme on my 09 R3 using the same programme method to deal with the alarm/door locking
C) - Any other suggestions - am I wrong with my plan of action?

any and all input greatly appreciated!

All the information regarding replacement keyfobs, including upgrading to the later switchblade keys, is in the Technical FAQ section, which is even more reason for you to invest in OC membership. :sign:
