Random thought. Did you do the change with your ignition on? (Don't know why you would, unless you like listening to the radio ) If it detected the drained condition it may have stored the fault? Did you fill the filter before fitting? It's messy when you turn it upside down, but essential to get instant pressure with no air locks.

Re: Oil light help please
Just a dirty connector most likely. A little spring steel clip and the connector will pull off, quick spray with electrical contact cleaner and some time to dry out then put her back on, should be reet.

Re: Oil light help please
Should I be doing this? I permit the engine to idle for a couple of minutes after filling just to let things "settle".

Re: Oil light help please
You should. Like many things, you can usually get away with not doing it, but it will take a few seconds for the filter to fill with oil, and in that time you are pumping air through your bearings. There are lots of YouTube videos showing what happens if you run an engine without oil. For a couple of minutes it makes little apparent difference (although the damage is starting). And it usually seems to take about 10 minutes for the engine to grenade itself. How many 'dry' filter changes would it take for your engine to grenade itself? Nobody knows......

Although, by the time you actually get the thing screwed on, I would imagine that the volume of air in the filter compared to the volume of oil in the filter is still going to be higher. Also, with this in mind, why would they not make the oil filter screw up onto the car, so you could actually attach it with it properly filled?
Do you think that pre-filling oil filters is standard practice in garages?

Re: Oil light help please
It is standard practice in garages, yes. Although not all garages follow standard practice... The filter contains a lot of filtering material, and some fairly small holes up the middle, so when you turn it upside down it's only really the centre tube of oil that empties. A surprising amount of the oil stays in the filter. The best way to do it is to fill the filter, leave it for a couple of minutes, top it up, leave it, then top it up a third time. This will fully saturate the filter. Then quickly turn it upside down, over a drip tray, to get rid of the "loose" oil in the centre tube. Then when you go to fit it you can turn it upside down without loosing that much oil, and keeping lots in the filter.
Most do screw in from below. Why did Mazda do it this way? Haven't a clue!

Re: Oil light help please
My old Toyota had the filter facing the road, but Subaru like to put them accessible from the bonnet.
My instinct is that few junior mechanics would bother, as it takes an extra minute out of their day.
