ToyoSports Hi Flo CAT

Post by tsfall »

Hi Guys,

Looking for a bit of advice. I've got, and fitted, a 200 cell Toyo CAT on my 8. I used all the supplied fitting kit, including the new doughnut for the midpipe end and the crush gasket for the manifold end.

Currently, it's blowing at the manifold downpipe flange - I know that some of the Toyo manifolds have less than ideal flatness tolerances, is this the case with the CAT as well? If anyone has any experience of getting it to mate up better (be it with a new gasket, firegum or similar) it would be appreciated. It's a big enough gap that GunGum got blown out of it...

Also, in someone's walkthrough of how to fit the Toyo DeCAT they say about using new springs and bolts for the CAT to midpipe section, yet my CAT came with solid ones - is that correct?

Any help is appreciated, as the blow is getting annoying!!

Someone else will be along to say it shortly, but did you use the OEM 'ring' gasket or the perforated gasket that came with the toyo cat?

The one that came with the cat is made of cheese and is pretty much useless. You're better off using the copper ring gasket instead :)

Hiya Dan,

I used the one that came with the cat, as the flange was flat and there wasn't any of the pipe protruding for the copper ring to sit on - or am I completely missing the point? I have still got the copper ring from the original, so I can get under and have a dig around!

Have you got the OEM manifold on the car or a toyo one?

The OEM manifold should have a little recess in it for the copper ring to sit in. Mine kept falling out whilst trying to fit, so I used a tiny little dab of exhaust putty to hold it in whilst fitting :thumleft:

If you're using a toyo manifold, then it could be that the gasket isn't sealing properly or it could be that the mating faces aren't properly flush?

It's an OEM manifold still. Looks like I'll be getting under the car when I get home then! I've still got some exhaust putty, so will put a tiny dab behind it to hold it in place! Now to see if I can do it without actually taking anything off....I reckon with the midpipe disconnected from the back box I should be able to get just enough clearance to slide the copper ring in...

It is just enough room, but takes some jiggery pokery to do. Depends on how flexible your exhaust bungees are, otherwise you'll need to undo the back as well :(

I managed to do mine without having to take it completely off the car :thumleft:

Use a pry bar.

I had to do the reverse (get gasket-type thing in backbox to midpipe join) at the weekend and slackening (but not fully undoing) the manifold to midpipe bolts and getting a small prybar in made it straight forward.

In unrelated news ... doesn't an RX8 with a massive leak in the exhaust joins sound like a Spitfire?!?!

Hi tsfall,

I have the same CAT and yes, over time I got this exact same issue. I left it alone a little while until it was causing issues with the engine not running correctly.
I used some exhaust gasket sealant on the joint and its got much, much better. No need to remove the CAT, just run it around the flange. Mine was leaking on the drivers side.

Should be springs on the bolts from the cat to midpipe.
If you read the write up it tells you to get the fitting kit from cats4u, and to use a small amount of putty.

So....

Fitted the copper ring into the manifold/cat interface and now it's lovely and quiet with no blow!

I still haven't fitted sprung joints in the mid section...main reason being the flange on the Toyo cat has threaded holes that are the exact size of the bolts supplied, they're much bigger thread than the old spring bolts that were fitted to the original cat. I'd say M10 at a rough guess?

I could be completely missing the point here, and the cats4u kit might come with this thread size on its spring bolts...if that's the case, please do let me know!

I also seem to have tracked down my odd idle....pulled all the plugs out to see how they looked, and the front rotor trailing plug was black! I'm thinking it's not firing properly, so have swapped the two trailing plugs to see if the "good" one becomes sooted or stays clean. Should be a quick way to tell if it's the plug or the coil/lead.

Yes, the threads are different. I thought the Toyo were M8, but it was a long time ago! I had some long bolts of the correct size, and used the OE springs. It was a bit gash, but it worked.

You should definitely run with springs and the donut gasket, otherwise you will be another person with a cracked Toyo :(

Pete,

I'm sure I can get something made up to do the same job - I've got the original springs, so it's just a case of getting the right bolt length to fit them on. Also won't require any disassembly :thumleft:

I recall I used shanked bolts, and screwed them in until they ran out of thread (told you it was gash!). The shank was the ideal length to give the right spring pre-load. But you could used full-thread bolts, and put a lock nut on to lock them off at the right length.

The other alternative is to use the original bolts with shorter springs.

I found some motorcycle clutch springs in my odds-n-sods box that were a perfect fit.

I would have done that, but I've never come across bolts so hard to get out as those weird exhaust stud thingies on the OE exhaust  I had two exhausts, and couldn't get any of them to shift. I think they are welded on ;)

I have the same problem, although I got it fitted. Bought the gasket kit from cats4u, using standard manifold. They were not able to fit the "O" ring so used an old gasket and gasket maker/putty. Blowing from driver side, might have to buy exhaust putty and try that.

Makes the car sound nice :)

Toyo cat captive threads on the silencer side are M10 1.25

I have a set of shanked bolts with penny washers specifically for dems. When the shank necks out, the springs are just right :D

Lock a nut on the front where the bolt threads stick out, killin' tha game.

Anyone know where I can get the gasket from manifold to Toyo hi-flow cat? I have called Toyo every day last week, no one picks up the phone!

I don't but I know of a simpler way to shoot yourself in the foot if you are indeed a sucker for pain?

Forget the Toyo gasket.

Get an OEM one from Rotary Revs.

The Toyosport gasket is made of chromed chocolate, better just to reuse your original or get another Mazda one

Digging up an old thread but this is specific to my needs.

I have fitted the Toyo decat and need to get longer bolts for the springs.

Would these suit
