Got some rarely used Mitutoyo stuff here and it's such a joy to hold and use. I would happily measure things on minimum wage for a living.
what "things" would you be willing to measure for minimum wage though? :o

One of my recent trips away was to Austin, Texas, where I picked up these lovely items. My kit of DeWalt power tools is now basically complete, I'm not sure there are any other tools in this range that will be of any use to me. The best bit? Because these are new old stock (they don't make the older post-type batteries anymore, nor the tools that use them, but they still have stock of them a few years on in the USA) they cost me the princely sum of $99 each. No sales tax either, since Texas is one of the states where you can claim it back at the airport. Not a bad day's work all told :)

What a great idea.

Just surprised they don't (seem to ) have a drive lock so you could use them as a breaker bar too.

It's one of those where you think, 'hasn't someone already done that'? So simple, as many of the best ideas always are.

That's cool. I wonder how much power it uses, as it's left on for long periods.

The pyramid media leaves the stuff looking bare!
Also wondering just how much it removes, like if its BZP, is it essentially stripping the zinc?

The folk next door have one, I don't know if they're just not using it right but they didn't seem that impressed by it. Maybe for the right situation, it's invaluable.

I was tempted to do the maths, as I suspect the running costs would be more than new off-the-shelf parts.

and yes, it did seem to remove the cadmium and BZP from the "cleaned" parts, which is just as bad as shot-blasting, only much less fun.

I'm trying to think of a situation where this setup would be an advantage, in a workshop.

Some production facilities do use a similar process between machining/stamping to remove burrs, prior to finishing, but it only makes sense on a production line.

I have recently become very bored with ball joints refusing to split. Over the years I have bought various things from Halfords. The wedges that you smash between the joint and the component have their place, but they destroy the rubber boot. Beating the joint with a hammer (or two) can also work, but sometimes it just doesn't. And the cheap "screw and lever" types can work on small ball joints, but mostly they just aren't up to the job.

So I now have one of these (with Halfords version for 'scale'):
20180519_151019.jpg
It's a Bergen B6026 hydraulic 12 ton splitter. It just ripped all 8 joints off the rear suspension with zero damage. An awesome tool.

Ah, you don't need that with the rex. According to the workshop manual:

1. Temporarily install a spare nut on the end of the drive shaft.
2. Knock the nut with a copper hammer lightly and remove the drive shaft from the hub.

Having beaten it with a lump hammer, can I borrow your puller at some point? [-o<

Ball joint tapers I've always found success with winding a nut on a few threads with a socket over the nut (resting on the flange to not mushroom the threads over) and alternating between hitting that down, and hitting the aluminium knuckle horizontally where the taper fits to pop it off.

So far so good, but perhaps I haven't had to fight with enough of them yet :D some have been stubborn for sure.
