Yes indeed. I told the missus that it had all arrived, and she asked me to list it all. I did so, and got the expected reactions until I mentioned the blowtorch - at which point she perked up and said 'Oh, does that mean I can make creme brulee?!' Honestly I was expecting a shake of the head followed by the word 'men', so when I got that I figured I'd done OK

Hi All,

Long time and no posts on this thread, but I thought I'd post an update to the thread after a recent bit of spannering.

Very recently I dropped the fuel tank out of my BMW so I could change the fuel breather pipe to one which doesn't have a hole in it in a place that meant it leaked. In order to do this (on my back, on a sloping driveway), I had to do the following things:

• Disassemble interior in order to release handbrake cable bowden thingy.
• Car on axle stands
• Remove arch liner
• Remove various chassis reinforcements
• Drop exhaust
• Remove heatshields
• Drop Propshaft
• Drop handbrake assembly
• Disconnect various fuel pipes & pumps.
• Drop fuel tank

I also replaced the rear trailing arm bushings.

Now I'm not going to list all the tools I used, but I thought I'd run through a fuel tools that were invaluable and why.

Impact Wrench

Without this, there's a few bolts I'm sure would have never come apart. Namely to remove the exhaust.

MIG Welder

I sheared a couple of bolts. After breaking various impact driver bits cutting into the remains of the stud, I got the welder out and welded a large washer and nut to it - and then used the rattle gun above. Wahoo, the remains came out!

Dremel

With a flex shaft, meant I could cut a screwdriver slot into rusted fastenings that held the arch liner in.

This made pressing new bushings in a lot easier than it could have been.

Now, the one thing that would have made life easier would be a flat drive and then being able to use a wheeled dolley thing to lie on - but that's a bit more difficult to do

Ha I did same got a smallish dermel blow torch thing but its all ok as can do the sugar on crem brulee lol!! hehe
Need to think of use for other tools now she might like lol

The air compressor was a surprising one, she was initially angry until she figured out a use for the blow gun - I think she used it for blasting the dust off some chairs she was sanding back, and I was suddenly in the clear again

I've seen too many torque wrenches toasted by people using them as bars.

So I already have a 1/2" drive torque wrench (40-200Nm) which I mainly use for my wheel nuts and it's quite large.

My question is, what torque wrench between the below should I get next and would be more beneficial when working on the car and why?

3/8" drive torque wrench (20-100Nm)

1/4" drive torque wrench (5-25Nm)

20-100Nm IMHO. The little one really is only hand tight – and you’re better off doing those by feel really – you can feel that you’re gonna snap them before you get to idealised torque spec etc. whereas 20-100Nm range is normally for more critical bits and bobs – and you’re less able to do by feel anyway.

I'd only find the little one handy on a bicycle, and I don't use one then really unless torquing up a bottom bracket or something, in which case I need the 20-100Nm one anyway.

You should of course get both really

I bought one from SGS for about £60 ish , it was great until it broke , a month after the warranty was up . They sold me a seal kit which I thought was £18.00 , turns out that was + vat and delivery so was more £30.00 . It worked for another 4 months then emptied its oil from elsewhere all over my newly painted garage floor , scrap man had it the following morning . I now use the ones the they at Costco , nice bit of kit , lightweight with double hydrolic rams , it was around £90 I think
