Bit of a Thread ressurection
Had some of these little rascals, laying about for an RC project
https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/323331468274?r ... 2396459224

Have been fixing the rear window mech on the other half's car and was having a nightmare trying to get the nuts back on as if you drop them they end up in a virtually unreachable area in the body cavity.

Brainwave
Insert magnet into socket and secure with 2 small drops of superglue
WhatsApp Image 2019-03-27 at 13.55.45.jpeg
Nuts now stay in the socket while you try to get them onto the thread.
Once complete you can knock the magnet out with a small screwdriver drift

Oh I like those!

Another tip for your mini magnets. glue one to the end of an old telescopic radio antenna. Makes a handy "rescuing nut from the abyss" tool

This is what I use as a telescopic magnet. Crap as a screwdriver, but excellent for getting dropped items.
Mine came from a pound shop.

Sometimes being strongly magnetic is just what you need, while other times it's the last thing you need.
This does the job, at a stroke...
https://www.tengtools.com/r/gb/en/Screw ... rger-MR500
though cheaper versions are available.

The cheapest way to make a screwdriver magnetic, at least temporarily, is to whack it sharply against a solid object, like the steel leg of a bench.
The shock aligns the tiny magnets within the structure and lines them all up, creating a significant magnetic effect.
It's a party trick I learnt as an aircraft technician and it's served me well over the years.

Another related trick...
Stainless steel isn't magnetic, or at least the really good marine grade stainless isn't.
This is useful to know when trying to find a stainless bolt among a bunch of similar looking bolts.
It's also quite handy when you're buying "stainless" fasteners, hose clamps etc, and want to be sure that they're actually the grade that you're paying for.
However, aluminium alloys and the cheap nasty zinc alloys that fake wheel nuts are made from aren't magnetic either...

Are these tiny magnets electrons by any chance?

In Lidl (NI) today they have a ½" drive ratchet handle that also doubles-up as a hammer, recognising that some guys can't resist thumping the bolt with whatever they have to hand.

Someone just needs to invent a torque wrench that's also a breaker bar, and a vernier caliper that's also an adjustable spanner, and we'll be sorted [-X

I already have the screwdriver/cold-chisel :D

If anyone wants to achieve the same for a lot less money get a bike inner tube, cut it opposite the valve, tie a knot in one end, put the other end over the filler cap and secure with cable tie or tape and then pump up with a bike pump to pressurise the system. Don't mean to P*** on your chips Reloy and I'm glad you found the leak.

Have you actually tried this Dern? I don't want to sound sceptical, but I'd be surprised if you could generate more than about 2psi in a bare inner tube. Is that enough to find anything?

Yes, definitely, used it loads. You're right in that it won't find any leak that requires a huge amount of pressure to be exposed by I've found leaks in radiators, hoses and hose joints with it. Most recently on my ktm bike. The good thing is that you can't generate silly pressures.

I used to use a winemaker bung with a tyre valve jammed in it which is fine if it fits the filler neck and you can get more pressure. However I did fire one in to my forehead which put me off a bit.

tool recommendations...

Post by qwakers »

i thought id start a thread for tools (hand tools power tools etc) that you would recommend. extra points for ones that you wouldn't expect to be any good... ill start with..

Aldi Ferrex 5" angle grinder.

i blew up yet another cheap screwfix grinder (actually this time it was 100% my fault, i badly overheated it. it still runs but the switch push mech is welded so you have to push the button inside...) so i needed one sharpish. 5" is better for wire wheels, and aldi currently have a offer on so i grabbed one.

actually id recommend most ferrex tools. they are a cheap way of getting reasonable kit. the battery stuff is reputedly very good but ive no personal experience.

any one got any more?

Einhell do some decent stuff for the money. How much was the Ferrex? Used to be able to get a 4.5" Makita angle grinder for about £40

Aye, some of the Parkside kit is surprisingly good too, can't remember if that's Aldi or Lidl though. They're a German manufacturer too.

We've got a Parkside hedge trimmer, multi-tool, and worklight that all use the same 12V battery packs.

The battery is tiny, just the size/shape of the multi-tool handle but the tools are powerful and the batteries last for ages.

Having 4 batteries means there's always a charged one ready to go.

I can't remember exactly how much they cost but it was less than a third of the DeWalt equivalent.
