Just place a sheet of varnished marine ply on top of the steel top which will increase the load capacity and also stop stuff sliding around which I always found an issue with a steel bench.New Duke wrote: ↑Tue Jan 04, 2022 4:14 pmI'm planning on getting a workbench. Mainly for working on lawnmower engines, maybe disassembling a Renesis or two, and general parts testing and fiddling. I currently only have a collapsible woodworking bench and lay bolts out on my garage sofa.
I've found one I like and the size that suits my available space best is 170cm x 75cm. It's got a steel top and can hold 1000kg, which I assume is plenty for a Renesis?
Workbench.jpg
They also do a different one with a load rating of 1500kg which is steel on top of MDF for £150 more. It looks nice but might be overkill?
Any thoughts on whether 170x75 cm is enough space to dismantle a Renesis? That's probably the biggest thing I'll work on. Or should I go deeper?

Re: Tools, tools, tools (was Thumb Ratchets)
Interestingly as I have some spare 18mm MDF I am going to use for a bench top and also some left over hard wax oil so good to see it performs well as a surface treatment.

Re: Tools, tools, tools (was Thumb Ratchets)
Well now I'm torn between being smart and saving money with MDF or feeling posh and using marine ply
First world problems.
I'm going smaller on the workbench. Only 120cm or 150cm wide and 75cm deep. I'm getting a bigger wheel/tyre track to store the 12 spare tyres/wheels that I keep in the garage for our cars. So a smaller workbench means I can get a more serious wheel rack.

Re: Tools, tools, tools (was Thumb Ratchets)
Thanks guys. Order placed on a workbench and new wheel rack. I'll be sure to seal the workbench top. With some better use of space in the garage I've worked out how to retain my sofa bed too. Which I thought I'd have to lose. The garage now has a big TV, sink, toilet, food, bed. It's nicer than my first home

I just bought these which means that any brand of burr or stone with 3mm shafts plus several sizes of drill can now be held firmly.

Falls into the Too Good To Be True. I did actually once order one to test the water and after several weeks when I chased delivery the tracker showed as "Delivered" and upon digging deeper this "delivery" was actually a mystery pair of cheap sunglasses that were delivered, I did wonder why I had received them.
I did get my money back though from PayPal.

It's only been 6 years, but the thumb ratchet that I bought when this thread kicked off really proved invaluable last weekend when I was disassembling my engine bay.

We've just been watching Vintage Voltage (S02E01) where they fitted a Porsche 911 with a Tesla S motor.
I always find the engineering interesting and was particularly pleased when they run the finished car out, and you could see that they have the same make and model 2-post lift as we fitted last year.

I bought my Twinbusch lift precisely because you rated yours highly Dave. It's been exceptional and while at first I gasped at the price compared to Chinese eBay lifts, now I think it was excellent value.

Re: Tools, tools, tools (was Thumb Ratchets)
Watching Ep3 of Vintage Voltage and they're fitting a Tesla small unit into the front of a Mini.
Only problem is it has to go in front to back, which means it has to spin in the opposite direction.
Apparently this isn't an issue for the motor (really???) but the oil pump that keeps the reducing gears lubricated would suck from the bearings and blow into the sump.
They made a neat adaptor plate to fit the oil pump the other way round, which solves that problem, but I think they missed a much more critical issue.
Apart from splitting the cases apart by hammering and levering screwdrivers into the joint, leaving visible damage that's going to compromise the refit, there's also the issue of reversing the torque through that gear train. They're helical gears so applied torque will be creating a significant side-thrust. The shaft and gear mounts will have been designed and engineered to resist that thrust in one direction for drive, with only a tiny bit the other way for regen.
Now their drive is reversed and so is the side thrust. That big gear has all those high-tensile bolts and big bearing to stop it lifting, while the small gear behind needed little support as it was pushing down....
Yes, their solution worked, but I wonder how many miles before it destroys itself.

Re: Tools, tools, tools (was Thumb Ratchets)
I ordered a pressure bleeding kit from Amazon the other day which arrived this morning but the tyre valve adapter was faulty and as expected there also was not a suitable cap to fit the brake master cylinder.
I went onto the Amazon website and whilst filling out the returns details the message "You do not need to return this product" flashed up followed by "Your refund has been sent" so whilst I will need to be inventive to get the kit to work I have received free!
