Sounds great. Could you let me know where to buy the replacement spark plug holes?

You're left handed aren't you? They're more expensive.

65000miles - no rebuild. never tested for compression, but so far no issues. Changed the starter (2004 car), and rest of related stuff kept in good working order.

Re: Engine Survey
i'm same. i think i jinxed myself saying i bought a really low milage car, too low a mileage to go wrong.Dr. FrankenRex wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2017 1:52 pmI don't want to play the engine survey game anymore :'(
oh well 22,000 and it wont move off the drive now. For me a new engine in the new year,on the plus side its given me time to modify a few other bits and make some repairs and changes to it, i'm always the optimist. :xmaswink:

Re: Engine Survey
see i went on a theory of the higher the millage the better the car (because its a higher millage i just presumed someone has looked after the car better) and so far nothing major has had to be done. but now i have said that i am doomed

Re: Engine Survey
22k is really very unusual/unlucky, do you know what failed in the engine Bex, or won't you know until they open it up?

Re: Engine Survey
Something like that. I’m really intrigued myself it will be cool info to have and I like to keep track of it’s history too. We do know from compression tests that the front rotar is pretty much shot, it’s producing no compression on 2 of the readings and the 3 reading was also not great. The back rotor read better but would still be considered a low compression readings.
I’m looking forward to getting it back and getting driving it again once it’s rebuilt, They are collecting it from me at 11:30.

Re: Engine Survey
Bex
Do you reckon the 22k mileage was 100% genuine?
Failure at that low mileage is strange as original plugs, coils should be fine still and very little chance of dodgy aftermarket replacements.

Re: Engine Survey
Just bought my first rx8.
53 plate, 231 model, 76k miles, no rebuild so I think it’s doing well! I am still monitoring how well it starts when hot.
Up until about 2 months ago I had been working in a Mazda dealership for 3 years. I did get the odd rx8 in with 80k odd miles on the clock.
One thing that’s a bit alarming is the amount of people who have had a rebuild fail after not very long, and have had to have more than 1 rebuild. Seems a bit of a gamble

Re: Engine Survey
we think it i was used as a door stop for 5 years. it gained no mileage over that time and wasn't on the road. so i imagine its possible it was started up drove a few feet and turned off a lot.

I noticed there are original engines pushing through 200k miles in the US. One is through 240k miles!

Re: Engine Survey
Many US RX8's would be automatics, which tend to be more gently driven and have an easier life.
The auto-box doesn't apply any end-thrust to the eccentric shaft, which gives the stationary bearings less strain.
Most auto engines are 4-ports, putting out less power.
The US-spec cars were only fitted with a single oil cooler (as standard) which means they get their oil up-to-temperature much sooner.
10W40 oil was specified in the US, rather than the 5W30 that Mazda specified for all their European models.
Cars in the US are often driven for much longer average journeys than in the UK, so a 100k mile car in the US may have only done the same number of cold starts as a 50-60k miler in the UK.
In any statistical sample there will always be anomalies at each end of the scale.

Re: Engine Survey
I'll add a couple more as well. In parts of the US the climate is much warmer, so cold starts, dead batteries, and flooding are less of an issue. There are fewer corners in the US, so oil and fuel pickup starvation are less of an issue. And the is no equivalent of the MOT, so cars don't fail emmissions tests (and maybe more got decats?)
