If you are getting new coils etc avoid any tempting cheap deals on eBay like the plague - get known genuine C revision coils or upgrade to D585s.. Most traders on here sell the genuine Mazda C coils (so Mazda Rotary Parts for example and upgrade to Magnecor leads at the same time - club members get a 5% discount too :thumleft: ), Rotary Revs do their own D585 kit or Essex Rotary do the similar BHR coils - both kits come with their own upgrade leads included in the price.

Rear stationary bearing failure at about 64,500. (Not 100% confirmed, but highly likely)

Not rebuilding myself, but who knows, someone may want to save her!

Apex seals replaced at 33k (along with new cat, ignition) by previous owner. Now at 56k and seems to be going strong (touch wood)

My last S1 got to 103k on original engine and it was still going strong when I sold it. Granted they were largely motorway miles but had some "naughty time" on a weekly basis.

Just as aircraft airframe life is often measured by the number of take-offs and landings, rather than just hours in the air, so the life of our engines can also be determined more by the number of journeys (especially cold starts) rather than just miles under the wheels.

As long as the engine is up-to-temperature, I'm sure that "naughty time" is good for it.

My '04 is not yet into triple figures, as she's no longer used as my daily, but she was still going strong on the original (un-rebuilt) engine, at least until I typed this...

RX-8 Kuro edition (2007)- 42.5k Miles
at the last compression test, in December, it got 9.2 bar on the front rotor and 8.7 bar on the rear rotor. 35-36k miles at that time.

No rebuild needed so far.

Just about possible, if your engine is nicely run in, and in factory fresh condition, and your starter motor is turning at close to 300rpm.

Is that an absolute figure? Or normalised to 250rpm?

If it's the former & you have a monster starter motor, it's potentially credible.

If it's the latter, i don't believe that could be a credible result.

I can't remember the rpm value, as for the starter motor, its the stock one. Please note that I'm NOT arguing the possibility of an error of the compression machine. But those were the numbers shown by it.

Re: Engine Survey

Post by Bex »

bough mine last week, really cheap so i suspect there is a reason for that, but we cant work it out yet.... cars only done 22,000 miles no engine rebuild to my knowledge,
though im also unsure if the engine is good or not as i cant tell what a warning sign would be from whats is normal sounds and/or its lack of service (its getting a service asap waiting on items to arrive as i dont think anyones done one and i have no history of service) it has a stupid loud exhaust so drowns out the normal engine noise makes it hard to identify if theres a issue or not. have on a few attempts struggled to start it, where it has chugged over loads i think its started but then the revs drop and it cuts off, after that it can be a little bit of a pain to make it start again, its a longer turn over than im use to with my other cars to make it start sometimes but im thinking thats more starter motor than engine? or could even be me not being use to it. when i feel the car start im having to catch it and rev it a little to keep it from dropping the revs and cutting out... makes me wary - but then most the times (its being driven daily now) its fine no issues at all.

Engine wouldn't die, compression around low-to-mid 5 kg/cm2 when removed and stripped for teh lulz at just under 75,000 miles.

Bearings not great, rear journal got a bit warm but no scoring.

All seals intact.

Front cover had various cracks in it and was the likely cause of my oily engine bay. Replaced with another now.

Both housings were pretty good in terms of chrome flaking and chatter but both had cracks in spark plug holes, now replaced.

All irons within spec and reused.
