Which premix do you use?

Post by Sil »

So i've run out of protek-r and i'm half way through the castrol in my sohn.
Just trying to get a feel for what most people are using!

Any particular reason for you choice?

Hi,

I use the Castrol Power 1 Racing as it's available to buy on the shelf at my local Halfords and it's a decent quality fully synthetic 2 stroke oil :)

Have also used the Motul 710 :thumleft:

I use the following 2T Racing oil (mainly on a price point!)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SYNTHETIC-RAC ... 43ade0526b

Its specifications are as good as the Motul/Castrol oil!

I actually brought a 25litre drum of the guy for around £90 at the time - still got it!

Well its not done anything bad. Therefore logic applied would mean it either does nothing or it does good. rebuilders do recommend premixing which means there has to be a benefit to it which means.....

Smells good, nice bottle and I get it cheap from my local Yam dealer. Other than that no real reason.

^ that's good mark! but again that's just an argument in favour of prefixing itself surely. How do you know your internals wouldn't be as shiny if you used any other 2T?

If I'm honest, I've been using asda's own brand since I started, but the last couple tanks switched to the castrol stuff and hmm, maybe it's slightly smoother, but I'm probably imagining the difference? :S

Pro-Tek R. Have a look in the Pettit traders section to see why, courtesy of a nice video demo. Although I am a totally ignorant b@stard when it comes to oil, and I know next to nothing about oil or oil testing, it would seem to me that not all pre-mixes are by any means the same.

Just use a fully synthetic 2T oil of your choice guys :) There was very little carbon build up in my engine after 67'000 miles so worth premixing for that reason alone =D>

Im presently using the last of some putoline I had left over from my enduro bike and then im going on to miller's racing synth, I used their oils in my rally car for years and never had an issue so I tend to trust their products. Competivly priced too :)

I swear by the millers KR2T ... Mainly since it was developed by millers specifically for high revving rotary's in very fast go-karts

Ironically I've never stripped an engine that has been specifically run using millers KR2T #-o but after being invited into the labs at millers oils to see how they developed the oil and test it I doubt I could find any reason not to use it.

On another note I put a 200ml shot of the stuff in tank of my Nissan and the difference it made to smoothness of that engine was as staggering as it is every time I litterally fix an rx8 with a shot =D>

And im applying it to Castrol 2T. Its used. Mark said his engine looked great/clean when being rebuilt. No problems reported. End of the day its just a brand. Seeing as you know what premixing is, not hard to fathom that it would be doing the job is it? Hardly clever. Just common sense.

Interestingly the fact Ben like the millers and rebuilt my engine is almost enougth to make me switch!
To be honest I'm amazed how well the Castrol is doing, expected an even spread.

I'd be interested to see the protek R vs millers vs Castro in a video...

I stumbled across something called gelling while reading about this and was wondering if I need to be careful when switching the sohn adaptor to a new oil!

That's probably due to Castrol's considerably larger marketing budget.

You will be fine as long as its the same spec i.e JASO FD

Ive switched my sohn oil from Amsoil Dominator to Motul 710 without an issue.
