Sounds more like you're 90% there rather than every variable wrong

I know, I was just being silly. I had the sizzling bacon sound but definitely too much weld build up. It is only the third time I have picked up the gun though!

Just realised I need to retract what I said about Halfords on here before. They didn't do a great job on the air con, which died the day after I'd posted that! Had it confirmed by an air con specialist on Friday that the Halfords tech had actually bungled it causing the air con to fail.New Duke wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 11:33 amI was at my local Halfords Autocentre on Saturday having the aircon serviced in my Volvo. They did a great job except that they'd turned on the service required indicator. Which on this model is a pain to turn off. Not a sequence of button pushes on this one, I've got to plug the Volvo software in. Grumble.

For my car rather than to my car today...
Made some progress painting the inside of the garage workshop, which needs to be finished before I'm allowed to fit the PZ suspension units. It may not seem much to have taken a day but..
- it takes me a while to get moving in the mornings
- the bare concrete blocks are a PITA to paint
- that wall is 8m wide and 5m high to the underside of the joists.
The timbers are straight, just had to use panorama mode on the phone cam to get the width in shot.
Nearly had to call the emergency services by the time I was done

You got that quality paint or the B&Q paint(read water)?
On a serious note though - it's looking really good! Coming along nicely Recently been painting block walls of the new shed in the garden, that's a tiny little thing but I still despise painting bare blocks hah!

for big areas like that....

Using Screwfix's own brand Trade Smooth Exterior paint, with the first coat thinned 5:1 with water.
It's going on okay and hopefully will only need two coats.
It's amazing how much it's already making it brighter inside as the blockwork is/was a very effective light absorber.

Yer we've go an airless paint sprayer and had intended to use it for this job.qwakers wrote:for big areas like that....

However, as you say, the stuff goes everywhere and it would take twice as long to mask/cover everywhere than to do the spraying - not helped by lack of ceiling.
Once we're away from the door and windows we might have another experiment with the sprayer.
The old walls (back and 3/4 each side), up to normal room ceiling height, are plastered, so might spray or roller.

Pretty stable rounded figures. Could go on for a lot longer yet! Could've been far worse like a side seal failure being imminent etc.

I think I got around 2 years with figures slightly worse and the engine would still start hot, but was decidedly tired (was taking slightly longer even with a be starter and battery, but who's start) so looking at around 20,000 miles

I’d be happy with those figures

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Not sure if it makes it any better that it was rebuilt just under 3000 miles ago in September 2019, this was I assume using the same housings as previous (unsure of refinishing etc, I don't believe so), but with a full genuine Mazda rebuild kit, so all seals/gaskets/bearings - So would have been essentially the same as this kit here, as I believe that's the mazda OEM kit also, and the price on the bill matches up.
Makes sense to me that it's pretty even, and i'm happy to see that. It's a bit low for my liking, but the test was done at operating temp, and a crank speed of 250-270, so at least I know the starter is good too hah!

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
If it only had 3,000 miles on it, there's a possibility it's building compression still if the housings were worn and not surfaced

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
True, was a thought too, as it's tougher to mate used housings to brand new seals, but even then I thought that the general consensus for that was around 5k miles at max? I'd have thought 3k would be getting close to it's final comp, but then you never really know.
I also don't know how it was driven previously before I bought it, and a good Italian tuneup may well be in order and could well help figures He told me he always warmed it up and never shut it off cold, but I don't think he ever beeped it or the like.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Best thing to do is drive it as it should be driven and monitor the compression

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
"Always warmed it up" sounds alarm bells to me.
It's great if it just means that he drove it gently, until at least the coolant was up to temperature, before giving it the beans.
However, there's a lot of mis-information around that the engine should be warmed-up at idle before driving off, which is really a bad thing to do. The engine runs super-rich from cold and takes longer to warm at idle than under a gentle load, so you get the rotary equivalent of bore-wash, plus the oil pressure hardly registers at idle, so bearing wear is accelerated.
This mis-information seems to have come out of the US and is often regurgitated by US sites. I don't know if it came from a misunderstanding of the "Let it warm up before driving hard" or people were deliberately trying to break their early engines because they thought they would be given upgraded replacements under warranty.
Let's hope the history of your car is more about the proper drive cycle, with maybe just too many short-shiftings and not enough Italian decokes.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Sorry. That was my shortened interpretation for easy writing - In long, meaning he didn't do short journeys and drove it gently as it warmed up. I can't speak for if he did idle it like that as he didn't explicitly say, but from how he explained his driving to me and "how you should drive it" in his words over the phone (before he knew I was in the know about rx8's and rotaries in general) I wasn't lead to believe that he did in any way, and his knowledge of the car and driving styles for it was relatively sound imo.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Unfortunately that's a no-can-do. Car's got a loooong list of MOT fails and likely won't be back on the road like I was potentially hoping. The welding needed is a fair bit on all corners, it has a fair few other issues and general wear and tear (paint/interior) and with the compression seeming low (at least for appealing numbers to make it easier when selling) it'll likely be too much cost/effort and better to break sadly and with the engine as it sits, it's worth something as a useable block, so it's not all lost, and someone could have an engine out of the ordeal unless someone want's a proper resto project? I can give more details......

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
No it doesn't was just curios, the rear tends to run hotter than the front and generally wears first, if there is a big difference in the compression numbers then its normally the rear that goes first.
15th year of ownership and still here
