It's a shame Rockingham comes after Oulton Park as its mainly left handlers!casey wrote: ↑Thu Oct 11, 2018 10:12 amLooking at those tyres if looked like you had some fun Chris :-) I'm sure it's obvious, but swap the front set to the rear for the next trackday to help even out the shoulder wear. I also find it's worthwhile to get a tyre fitter to reverse the tyres on the rims after a while, to move the worn shoulders to the inside, if there's still plenty of general tread depth left. Only costs £10 a corner. I get 3-4 more trackdays out of a set that way. Only issue I've found is the RSRs are surprisingly good in the wet when new, but truly awful when down to 3-4mm!

Filled the tank, again. 3rd time in less than a week of ownership! 12 mpg - some enthusiastic back road driving involved
Ordered a mountain of parts to give it a good service, 4500 miles since last oil change going by what little service history I have.

It’s funny how the tracks over here ramp fuel prices up , when we were in spa it was €1.62 which was a reasonably average for out thereChrisHolmes wrote:This week has been a killer for fuel mainly due to Thruxton

Begun the job of diagnosing repeated - 3 times since last Sunday at Silverstone - instances of P2107,revs jumping up to 3K with loss of throttle input, and CEL and traction control lights coming on..

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
The most common cause of P2107 (Throttle actuator control module processor error) is a PCM malfunction. This can be due to a bad connection to the PCM or an internal corruption.
Bad connections are more common if the PCM has been disconnected at any point, e.g. to map, which should be obvious as the anti-tamper bolts will have been removed.
Internal corruption of the PCM can occur for various reasons but the most common is when jump starting the engine, connecting jump leads with the ignition switch in the On position. Sometimes this will fry the PCM completely, other times it just results in random P2107 events.
It has been reported that clearing the PCM can stop (or at least reduce) the instances of P2017
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=34703
Otherwise PCM replacement is the only fix. With our UK cars that also means replacing the keyless control unit, etc, so is not to be undertaken lightly

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Back in April,Nick (13Black) performed an ECU swap,in order to eliminate that component as being the culprit in my - then - ongoing starting/running issue, which had been plaguing the car for almost 18 months..
Obviously this meant drilling out the aforementioned security bolts - thankfully only two on the R3 - and disconnecting/reconnecting the ECU's. Later that same day,the same thing happened, and once again uncoupling the ECU plug connectors, giving them a blow out and refitting, cured the issue... until it resurfaced again last Sunday,as I was about to leave Silverstone. Performing the same procedure again cleared the problem, and the car was fine on the drive home.
Since then, the same issue has recurred, and each time,uncoupling/recoupling the ECU harness connectors 'resets' things..until the next time the car is fired up..

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
So difficult getting to the bottom of an issue that seems to have a mind of its own.
I've got a few tins of electrical contact cleaner that need using up so might as well give it a rate good blow out sometime with the compressor if you like. Hopefully rules that out.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
I wonder if one (or more) of the sockets in the connectors are loose/corroded , and that's what causing the problem.
Definitely sounds like you're in the right area.
I have come across an S1 PCM plug with bits of swarf, I assume from drilling out the security bolts, jammed up inside, but it was clear that whoever had previously removed those bolts had taken very little care, given the "drill tracks" across the top of the bracket.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Yeah I get out the cloths and magnets when I have to drill out PCMs.
I recall a car last year that had EPAS, much unplugging of things later, then no EPAS. Only getting 5v.
Much corrosion on the connectors, scuff them up nice and bright. Yay 12v and it works again.
Can give the pins a good look and whip out the 240grit.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Talking to Clive today and he's had a problem with his fuel injectors "running @ 99% duty cycle" even though it's clear from other readings that the fuel flow was nothing close to that level
Turns out that the loom connectors onto the injectors had grown green verdigris inside, increasing the resistance and giving the PCM a false impression of what was going on. A good clean-up of the connectors and all was sweet again.
Mazda use reasonably good quality connectors, in the most part, not up to aerospace standards but good for automotive, though they are sometimes let down by lack of corrosion protection "from behind". That is, the bits that fit together can seal okay but water can get in via the wire entries.
This was formally recognised by the upgrade of the headlight levelling sensor connections, which are in a particularly exposed location, but similar issues can occur anywhere that can be splashed.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Changed the drop links again.
Was never quite happy with the cheapo ebay ones I put on last year as I could never get them tight enough and they clunked a bit after a while as they moved about. Got these japspeed ones off a fellow member, which look a lot more robust.
Also did a third oil and filter change in a year / 3000 miles and 3 track days. I thought the old oil looked quite clean on the dipstick but it was definitely a lot darker than the new fresh golden x-flow oil I put in.
Next job is to brighten up the headlights with a refresh kit.

I suggest that you get some Rose Joint boots/gaiters for those if you using the car regularly on the road or they will wear out quicker than a whores *%^$£
I still have my £16 eBay "specials" as fitted in 2014 on my car, after 30,000 miles and c12 track days with uprated ARBs too!
