Not sure spraying is the word you would associate with orbs of fire shooting out your trail pipe.

Can someone please explain why it's bad for the LSD as I don't think it would be detrimental but I cannot explain why!
I've been ferreting about, and can't find any reasoned argument that a LSD would suffer being towed.
There does seem to be some other cases where a gearbox that relies on an oil pump driven by the input would [understandably ] suffer, but that's nothing to do with diffs [of any sort].
Also, AIUI you must only tow a 4wd with all wheels on the ground [or none] or the centre diff will go nuts! (Dunno if that applies in all cases, tho')
To quote Dave Baker of Puma Race Engines here:-
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/top ... 0&t=590588
"This really is only a matter of incredibly basic common sense. An LSD does absolutely nothing unless both wheels are rotating at significantly different speeds when one has started to spin because the power applied has exceeded the available grip. A car being towed can't conceivably spin one of its wheels. They just trundle along at the same speed. The LSD can't possibly be operating. Even if it was it would only be doing what it does in normal use which it is designed to last a lifetime of."
/On the face of it/ that makes sense.
If someone knows better please tell me! :)

WikiPeteHia is a much higher quality resource, however.

Nickipedia is mainly crayon drawings strung together with cable ties.

I really must learn to RTFM!
However, it doesn't answer the question why?
Is there something in the diff that doesn't like being driven /by/ the wheels?

An update regarding my change to RedLine MT90 GL4 gearbox oil to see if it cured the crunching when going from 3rd to 4th.
Initially I thought it hadn't but then I did a few laps of Snetterton and on the way home realised it no longer crunched at high revs when changing 3rd to 4th gear at high rpm. Happy day!

I have a suspicion that that piece of advice found its way into the manuals for all rwd cars, despite the technical reason only being applicable to those with automatic transmissions - which would be particularly annoying as Mazda only imported the manual RX8 into the UK.

However, it could also be to do with the way that components in the diff and manual gearbox are lubricated, where torque is expected to be applied from the engine to the wheels 90+% of the time and only a very small % on the overrun.

This does make me think of the Range Rover transmission failures that reached epidemic proportions when the model was first used for Police motorway patrols, but nowhere else. In the end, Rover sent engineers out with the Police to find out what they were doing different to everyone else, and the answer was...

.... reversing for miles on end, at fairly high (30 mph +) speeds back down the hard shoulder, from the scene of an accident, to get to the back of the forming queue.

Seems that the gearbox lubrication only worked when the gears were spinning forwards. #-o

Okay, when being towed with the (normally) driven wheels on the ground, they are still rotating in the normal direction, but the load is still reversed, which could impact how the lubrication film is formed and maintained.

Otherwise, it's just a hangover from automatic 'boxes that don't like it, and lazy manual writers.

That's great to hear as I'm still hoping that a fresh fill of MT-90 (long overdue refresh) will be the answer to the same symptoms on mine.

Seeing the posts about the recall for the fuel pump sealing ring replacement - does this apply to all S1 RX8s?

It certainly covers a lot, mine was registered in 2007 and had the recall.

On the phone to my local dealer, he took my Reg, and confirmed mine would also be included in the fuel pump seal recall. He then went on to tell me that Mazda were issuing a recall for RX8s to have the front suspension lower arm replaced. He couldn't think why this would be needed "at this age" but apparently mine will be getting it.
I'm wondering if getting springs and shocks replaced at the same time would save time [and so money]; he said the alignment would need to be done also, and if anything else broke in the process, that would be included in the recall work. Anyone else heard about this?
PS apparently the recall work is being staggered as dealers are busy at this time of year with work due to new registrations.

Its the 2004 cars that are at risk of the lower ball joint housing in the arm cracking the wheel assembly going awol. Its an inherent fault and therefore there is no time limit on liability. Strange they are listing yours under the recall as its a 2006 model. I vaguely remember reading many years ago about some ship engine liners, in tanker size ships, that failed and after almost a decade in use and it was proven to be an inherent casting fault, now that's when its good to have liability insurance!

At dealer labour rates replacing the shocks and springs at the same time would be costly plus I doubt they would fit your own parts, again for liability reasons.

The workshop time for replacing the arms is I believe around 1 1/2 hours but that is based on brand new assemblies not 14 year old corroded in place seized ones so expect to not have the car for a few days, hopefully they should provide a courtesy car as its Mazdas fault the car needs to go in.

I bought a 2006 car with a broken wishbone
I seem to remember our last chairman Ben had a wishbone failure at Donington when I organized the agm meet there.
I haven't had any recalls but then there all in Paula,s name so I can drive how I want :-$

Was Ben's failure a front upper A arm, as opposed to LCA? For some reason that's what's been saved in my brain but I wasn't there of course.

I used to be able to optimise the c*** out of an autoexec.bat and config.sys file to get the most conventional memory to run the best programs and games back in the day

(That previous sentence will only be relevant to those of us born pre-90s and also are bit nerdy  )
Necessity being the mother of invention, that and trying to find an extra few kilobytes to run something. Leaving a hole in the video memory and launching the cdrom driver after boot up normally did the trick!
