Had it in getting a second hand AC compressor fitted, turns out it's leaking in the exact same way as the original (came off a similar mileage car, so must be a common failure time). So it's looking like the best option will be to fit a brand new compressor at about ten times the cost :(

That can wait until the new year.
Last time I looked, the compressor for the earlier cars was stupid money.

However, the complete compressor and clutch assembly for a later car will fit fine, you just can't mix early/late clutch/compressor, and that complete later assembly was just over half the price of early compressor.

Mazda "adjusts" their spares prices ever month, depending on a number of factors, including stock levels and expected demand.

The shop I'm getting to do the work is going to price up a remanfuctured unit from another brand - no mention of going through Mazda, probably for that reason. Looking at third party options myself they range from £350-450 brand new, and I'd imagine the oe part is significantly more expensive.

Anyway for the work to be warranted the shop need to supply the parts, so he's going to price me up for a compressor and dryer replacement. I'll find out next week, hopefully the damage isn't too bad. Lucky I'm planning to keep this car a long time.

A complete new Mazda compressor and magnetic clutch assembly, including the pulley, (#F151-61-450A) is currently only £462 +VAT (retail) which sounds like a bargain compared to unknown 3rd party options.

While the early compressor is £716.16, on it's own

I wouldn't say that they're unknown, they're just not OE. I won't pretend to know who the big names are in AC compressors, but it's an AC specialist that I'm going through, and they've been good at keeping costs down so far. He's going to see if there are remanufactured options from their "bigger names" - I trust that they know their industry and who to get good parts from (they're well reviewed and have been very professional - even taking on board my instructions for treating the rotor well, which they were good about as they had not encountered one before).

In saying that, if the compressor comes out more than that price, then I'll be suggesting it!

Just checked the price for new (early type) compressor drive clutch and that comes out @ £670.04

So, if you went into your local friendly Mazda dealer with your VIN and ordered a replacement compressor and drive clutch, they would happily take you for £1,663.44 (£716.16 + £670.04 = £1,386.2 plus VAT) rather than £554.4 (£462 plus VAT) for the complete later assembly, which also happens to be more reliable

I didn't even realise the clutch/pulley was separate - every compressor I've looked at is the complete unit.

Could you look up the price and part # for the later Dryer as well? That'll give me a basis to make an informed decision on which parts to go for - if its all around similar prices, then I'll suggest the later Mazda parts.

Mazda don't list the dryer as a separate part, is comes pre-assembled with the condenser, and isn't designed to be removed.

Nor do they recommend its replacement as a maintenance item, which is contrary to the advice from some ac specialists.

Interesting! I'll wait to hear what the specialist makes of that. He said they definitely replace the dryer when fitting a brand new compressor, and it's a requirement for their warranty. Of course they mostly deal in european brands, and he admitted he doesn't know much about Mazda's specifically.

EDIT: Reading through the HVAC manual there is a troubleshooting step where the solution is to replace the condenser (so assuming that's the dryer as well). I guess this isn't a regular maintenance situation though, it's more a major repair of the AC.

Testing on the rollers is not fine and can damage the diff. The MOT system does I think flag this up and state use decelerometer.

About a month ago, though he didn't have one advertised. I sent a message asking for one, didn't get a response, but then a listing showed up, so probably worth just doing the same.

At the moment for RHD he's got the full kit advertised (w/ sohn adapter): https://www.ebay.com/itm/203106313997 - which was all there was for RHD when I messaged him.

Oh okay nice thanks. I think I will have to pop him a message then too as I only need the “support kit” tank bit.
