Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Not an RX-8, but doesn’t really warrant it’s own thread on ‘The other car’ either...
Installed new front lower control arms on my Landry with after market units fitted with Meyle bushings as the oil-filled bushings in the OEM arms had failed. Not the easiest job to do on my driveway - especially as the car’s air suspension (which was supposedly locked in low pressure ‘access mode‘) moved after disassembly. I had to manually depressurise the air out of the dampers to get the new parts in .
Anyway, no more knocks or wobbly steering now and better than paying £1,200 for a dealer to do the job . Just got to get a 4 wheel laser alignment booked in to fine tune my tracking approximations!

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
I've got 2010 RRS that has the low speed knocking thing. Never had time to diagnose it fully as I don't know if its ARB bushes or arm bushes as I've heard that they're notorious for both. Interesting you've done that though and sorted it. It's got a horrific grind/squeal developed today though. Don't know what it is, maybe bearings. Maybe its the start of the dreaded LR ownership....R1DSO wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 9:12 pmNot an RX-8, but doesn’t really warrant it’s own thread on ‘The other car’ either...

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
If your RRS has the oil-filled rear lower control arm bushings and has done over 50k miles, I would strongly suspect the knocking is a failed bushing. I say ‘if’ as I believe some RRS had solid rubber bushings. It should be fairly easy to check by giving the control arm a waggle for excess movement with the wheel off.LeeW wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 9:21 pmI've got 2010 RRS that has the low speed knocking thing. I think most of the more modern LR reliability issues come from electronics. This is precisely why I bought Discovery without any electronic accessories that I could do without - electronic seats, reversing cameras etc etc.
Their heavy weight means they munch through suspension and brake components. And there are some other maintenance considerations - for instance, I’m eying up next a fairly unique and complicated DIY tranny fluid flush. And, if I ever blow one of the turbos, you have to remove the body from the chassis to replace it. That won’t be a driveway job .

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
by the time thats been ground back to clean weldable metal that hole will be fair bit bigger...10 mins with the grinder...20/30 mins to cut a patch...20/30 mins with the welder.factor in the time it takes to jack up and paint some sealer on. 2 hrs work. so he wants £100 an hour? i will take up body welding again i think.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Having spent a while looking for quotes to sort my sills out, I think there’s a ‘worthwhile’ factor included in rusty car welding quotes. They don’t want to do the job so they just bump up the price to one where it’s worth it anyway but has nothing to do with time or materials.xamtex wrote:by the time thats been ground back to clean weldable metal that hole will be fair bit bigger...10 mins with the grinder...20/30 mins to cut a patch...20/30 mins with the welder.factor in the time it takes to jack up and paint some sealer on. 2 hrs work. so he wants £100 an hour? i will take up body welding again i think.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
My grinding was a wheel bearing as I thought. Yeah it has the oil filled bushings as it has the dynamic response driving mode available. It's just done over 50k too so it all sounds about right. Mine is due to have all the transfer boxes and tranny fluids changed. Let me know how you get on with yours. I went for a 2010 for similar reasons. I wanted the modern interior but also wanted the simpler TDV8 and they only done it for one year!R1DSO wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 10:58 pmIf your RRS has the oil-filled rear lower control arm bushings and has done over 50k miles, I would strongly suspect the knocking is a failed bushing. Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Dropped off at Preserve & Protect this morning for the full monty underbody rust removal/conversion/protection treatment. Also getting stone guard black strips added up to the top of the sills/bottom of the doors seeing as the unsightly previous repair extended up a bit, and I don't plan to re-spray for a looooong time.
Should be back to me on Saturday.
Now I'm lost and confused for a week - what the heck am I supposed to do with myself??

Swapped my bonnet today, the old one was showing a lot of aluminium corrosion, some had been there since purchase in 2008. Only thing is I have to refit my struts, so new rivnuts ordered.
