I've only had Rainsport II on both the 5 and 8 and I think for a road tyre they're great.

Don't last long being abused but that much should be self evident.

Not sure how they compare with other similarly priced tyres, but independent reviews seem to suggest they're up there.

Rainsport 3's are ok on the front but don't last long on the rear and are too soft (in the dry) for trackdays, they get upto temperature quick and seem to grip well in the snow.
At around £55 they are pretty decent tyre for uk roads

I haven't had them before but they have good reviews for the wet and the tread pattern is similar to the Sessantas. I don't do track days, so that shouldn't be a problem. Cheapest I found them on the club tyre price tool in 235/40/18 95Y so a local tyre fitter could fit them was about £87 each. I was considering the Vortis or Falkens otherwise.

According to the Camskill specs there are three differences [apart from price]

size 225 235
Load 92Y 95Y
fuel eff'y C E
price 60.90 78.90

(Grrr, I carefully put in tabs to make it easy to read, but they were ignored!)

the tyre illustrated is the same for both, and a different size to both of these, so they /may/ not have the same tread pattern.
I'm surprised at two things: the different fuel efficiencies, and the price difference if the only major change is in the size.

Yes it’s been snowing so for reference:

There are two towing eyes in your boot and the tow points on the front of the rx8.

If you happen to find yourself in a ditch as I did tonight the tow points are located in the main front grill at the top on the left and right. If you shine a torch there you will find two rectangular slots to access the clips that hold the grill caps in place.

Take a flat head screwdriver and lever them out to expose the threaded holes for the towing eyes in the front chassis/bumper bar. If your threads are rusted like mine were you may need to use the wheel wrench in the eyelet to make sure you secure it properly before attempting to tow it out.. (no it wasn’t cross threaded).

I thought i’d post this because I had a right time trying to find them and the owners manual was at home so I had no reference.

My Rex lives to fight another day as to I, careful on the roads guys Happy driving

The thread usually rusts up preventing the eye being screwed in so its worth "servicing" that and copper slipping or plain greasing it in case you need it one day

I just had a quick look at Camskill. Please be aware that the £60 Rainsport is a 225/40. It might seem like an attractive price, but this is not the correct size for an RX-8. It will cause your speedo to read incorrectly, could affect the ride and handling, and should never be mixed with the correct size tyres.

Hi Pete, I thought 225 40 was a very common tyre size used for the 8s? (I run these on 18s), is this not the case

I didn't say you can't fit them. But you should never mix them with the correct size. I wouldn't fit 225/40 because they are a smaller tyre with less air volume. The general ride and handling will not be as good as a 225/45 or a 235/40. And they will look a bit weedy in the arches (although that is a personal taste thing).

Also, be aware that fitting a smaller tyre, with lower load rating, could invalidate your insurance and, in certain circumstances, actually be unsafe.

Technically you can dazza, have to be something pretty serious/expensive for the insurance to look into it enough to notice things like that but it does happen.

If they take it to extremes insurance could even be invalidated for not having the manufacturers recommended make of tyres.

This was challenged in the courts some time ago - I have the reference somewhere - and wasn't upheld.

As long as the tyres fitted meet the performance specifications, then any brand is acceptable.

Obviously, there are some hypercars where only one brand and product will meet those requirements but for the 8 you just need to ensure that speed and load rating are as required and that sizes and construction are matched across the axle to meet legal requirements.

However, mixing front/rear, either as replacements or deliberate "staggered" setups may disable or cripple the ABS/DSC/TCS functionality, which would also invalidate your insurance and would be stupid.

The specifications and grading need to be more strenuous though as some of the ditch finder tyres out there that dealers tend to throw on at point of sale feel positively dangerous and yet they are legal.

That is great then if that has been successfully challenged. I have a general distrust of insurance companies who seem to wiggle out of claims if they can. I recently worked with a person who was high up at a large insurance company in a previous job and his whole response ethic to questions and decision making is none commital and obstructive.

I'm surprised at the different fuel efficiency ratings (on Camskill) for those two very similar tyres. Or is it a typo?
