Whilst Lilly James was out the back of my house in a 1930s Bentley I finally fitted the extended adjusters for the rear coilovers!

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Car randomly decides to take longer or shorter to start some times when hot/cold. But its never consistent. Checked the voltage across the battery when starting up it dropped to 10V but when its running its at 13.75V which my mechanic says is a bit low and that its possibly the alternator not putting out enough charge. Anyone got some input on that situation?

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Top of Google hits suggest that your charging voltage is possibly a touch low but the voltage when starting is normal at 10 volts and I would have thought that was the critical figure in this context.
I would look to blame something else.
You checked your battery post connections are solid?
As it is intermittent or erratic I would very much be concentrating on connections for example ignition leads and their connection to the plugs.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Yeah the battery connections are fine as far as Im aware. My mechanic said that the charging voltage is a tad low and on shorter journeys that wouldnt exactly be ideal as the battery wouldn't be getting a big enough charge.
Could be possible that on some shorter journeys the batterys not charging enough and the starting voltage drops due to that? Pain to test since I dont tend to have anyone else in the car with me most of the time.

You should be able to read a multimeter reading while cranking and/or starting the engine and you could do a test from cold and then after a journey and see if the voltage while cranking is different.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Very short journeys can take more out of the battery than they put in but the RX8 charging system is capable of keeping on top of this, if everything is as it should be.
However, it only takes a slightly loose connection or bit of corrosion, e.g. on the main body earth, and that goes out the window.
The charging voltage is much more complex than a conventional car, with the PCM managing the alternator load to maintain a smooth idle, plus other factors such as temperature are used in the algorithm - basically, 13.75V might be exactly correct for when it was being tested.
If the power steering is consistent, which also takes a lot of electrical energy, then you need to start your investigation at the starter itself, especially the fat wire that comes down from the battery. Note that this is "live" so don't be putting a spanner/socket on it and shorting to the body.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Ill have a look at the main body earth. And give the starter wire a check over too.
Ill attempt to crank and check the voltage too. Not sure how long the wires for my multimeter are off the top of my head.

Do you own a friend/significant other who might be trusted to turn key (ideally with fuel pump fuse pulled) while you measure with the multimeter?Yorindesarin wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2019 2:37 pmIll have a look at the main body earth. And give the starter wire a check over too.

Nope. Unfortunately not ahah. Not anyone who would be available after a short journey. On a cold start maybe at some point. Ill figure something out Im sure.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
I see from viewtopic.php?f=58&t=37934&p=714899&hil ... st#p714899
that:-
"The workshop manual for the RX-8 states the “standard” compression as 120 PSI (8.5) at 250 RPM, and the minimum as 98.6 (6.9) PSI at 250 RPM. Standard difference in chambers should be within 21.8 PSI (1.5), and difference between rotors within 14.5 PSI (1 (kgf/cm2). Readings outside of those levels, i.e., lower compression readings or greater difference in readings between rotor faces or between rotors, indicate a 'less-than-healthy engine' that probably requires rebuilding."
What figures could be expected from a typical engine that has done 55,000 miles?
(Mine are Front: 7.5, 7.4, 7.5
Rear: 7.0, 6.8, 7.0)

See dis:
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=77931#p1171375
From my data, around the 6.3 kg/cm2 mark, normalised to 250rpm.
But of course, lengths of string vary wildly by how roughly they're handled.

So it looks like I've been [very?] lucky with mine (assuming Big Pete uses the standard testing procedure), as his figures are at [or normalised to] 250 rpm.

Today I began the repairs of my poorly '06, 231. Leaking oil cooler pipe removed and broken front bumper re attached. Discovered that I need two new front tyres due to kerb damage

Had to cancel my tyre order due to the fact they hadnt even fully processed the order after a week and a few days... Will have to find somewhere better to order them from this time round! My fronts are definitely point level bald right now.
