i have one of those claw types, the lazer one that has knurled tubes rather than flat legs. works every time, even on a old van that had the filter rusted to the block. poput a torque meter on it out of curiosity, finally broke free with about 300nm torque! (and a loud yelp from me when i caught my knucles on the wing!)

Not only are these oil filters exactly the same spec as the S1, but they come with the removal tool

I haven’t forgot about the number plate mounting I’ve been a bit preoccupied with Ranjan’s car if your still looking for a revised version ready for next spring Image

Just sorned my 8 too, ref the battery, just removed it from the car and brought it inside, so temps not an issue over winter and use the Ctek charger/conditioner on it to keep it good for next year.

I was considering doing that. But with the possibility of the car being off the road for a bit longer than to next spring (I have a lot I want to get done before it goes back on the road and finances obviouisly play a big part in that) I'd rather not have the power steering or another system crap itself from no charge. :/

Wouldnt worry about that, My 8 was in that very situation being off the road for two years, no battery connected. To be fair, a battery connected or not makes no difference

I hear its a possibility but not a guarantee to be fair. Would just suck if I did it and it did mess up.. No real easy specialist access for me currently.

I took it for its MOT and brought it back again, with a pass and no advisories. :)
I did agree to him replacing a u bracket on the exhaust system near the back which was so rusty it was a fraction of its original thickness!

Jeez...

Got the filter off, new filter on, topped up the oil, then received a phone call from Mrs H to say she was having her third migraine in three days, so bad half her face was drooping.

Chucked everything back in the car and, thanks to the 8, made whats normally a 30-45m journey in 25m, enough time to get her to hospital before the ambulance she'd been called would have arrived, and be seen and then come home - as thankfully they don't think its anything serious (or at least more serious than 3 days of migraines are).

Moments like this make me thankful for the ability of the car. Thank you Rx8. I just hope I haven't missed something vital in my rush.

Try using the K and N filter with the hex top that you can undo with a socket . Works a treat for me

Back on the filter tool note - the three claw one I bought had silicone/rubber feet on it and gripped the old filter like a beast. Other than being a bit fiddly to get over the top correctly because the filter on the 8 is canted away from the easiest angle to get to it and I was working by torchlight, it sat on and popped the filter off with no problems. Drove car to work this morning and oil level is good and nothing's gone BANG, so chalking that one up as a win.

So when we were at Spa the clutch failed and sort of spoilt the day a little.
So today the engine came out again Image to diagnose the issue.

Found a collapsed thrust bearing and a very poorly clutch plate Image

So out with the competition clutch and in with an Exedy one, and a new Mazda thrust bearing.

Far easier to take the engine out as it’s on quick release fixings than laying on your back struggling to get back up to grab hold of the zimmer.

Just setting off to the Mazda Dealer in Gloucester for air bag and fuel pump recall. Already had a long discussion there regarding the fuel pump seals having already been done but they want to look anyway.

Just been advised that they are not touching the actual fuel pump but have fitted new lock ring seals and the foam insulation to the tank.
I will be filling up at the Shell station just down the road which will be the moment of truth for the seals.
