Tech screws? You know what, that's a great shout. Not sure why I didn't think of thatChrisHolmes wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 8:57 pmFor my undertray with seized and broken screws I used the self drilling, self tapping 8mm hex head screws you can pick up in B&Q which will drill into the metal making a secure fixing.HarSc wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 7:10 pmRecently picked up a big bag full of undertray/bumper screws, since last time I removed the bumper I found most to be rusty, ready to snap or in general - really not wanting me to wake them from their 11-year-odd slumber on the car
So I'll be getting in there and replacing them all when I have the bumper off again (which won't be too long away if I find some time in the coming weekends)

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
I have recently tackled this job on mine and was wondering the same thing, the R3 engine side fittings rely on the o ring for sealing and not the copper crush washers on the cooler side, and m8 versus m18 bolts. After speaking with RRP, the advice was just do them up tight enough not to come undone. Wouldn't try putting 50-60Nm through them.xwing wrote:Spent the day stripping out my oil cooler lines, so hopefully start fitting the new rrp oil lines tomorrow.
Took a good couple of hours to loosen the nuts at the engine end, and stripped out a bit more than I thought I needed. Just a quick question, is there a torque value when tightening the new pipes to the engine or is it as tight as you dare. I've found the torque settings for the oil cooler ends but not the engine ends in the r3 workshop manual.
Also, use grease, not oil when putting them in the hole to avoid pinching the o ring.

When helping my uncle fitting electric gates, we use them all the bloody time. No idea why I forgot they exist when I needed to replace my undertray screws last week.ChrisHolmes wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 9:22 pmThat’s the beasts, good to know what they are called officially!

I put plenty of oil on the o rings when I put them in didn't think of using grease, hope they will be ok.
I'm hoping to get the car back together today after a rainy day yesterday

At Caterpillar we don't lubricate any o rings on any hydraulic fittings, torque to spec and that's it

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Popped down to TPS this morning to see why my coolant keeps need refilling regularly. Looks like the rad has seen better days, so is the culprit, so a koyo one ordered and trying hard to get time off to get it fitted before my track day at Snetterton next week. Running out of holiday at work to do the important stuff!
Also popped down to wheels in motion to get my slightly wonky steering sorted and get the 4 wheel alignment done.
Lastly fitted my replacement mic for my grom, as you can't just buy a mount for the mic on its own, so I swapped the whole thing. Had the mic for a while but finally had a day to fit it.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Dropped her off this morning and was told he would be in touch tomorrow
The tracker sent me a message at 3.05, so it was sat most of the day, then more messages almost continually until 6.15 then the call to pick her up
So new Brembo Disks and pads, new Mazda Hubs for the front and new Mazda offside rear wheel bearing.
You don't realise just how much noise a bearing makes when it's on the way out.
She now brakes perfectly with no judder and is much quieter, happy days
Should have replaced the Hubs back in April hindsight is a great thing

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Bolt torque depends primarily on the diameter, thread and material. For your M8 bolts, I’d expect them to be high tensile 8.8 rather than the cheaper 4.6 used in body panels and the like (the first number refers to the tensile (ie ultimate) strength, the second the proportional yield strength (here 80% and 60% respectively)). The bolts should have marks on the head indicating the material, eg 8.8 typically has 6 radial lines. Check the material and thread (IIRC M8 has 1.0 for fine, 1.25 for coarse) then look up the standard torque. The engine side threads should be strong enough for both strengths. The torques are quite different for 4.6 and 8.8 so I recommend that if in doubt, change the bolts for 8.8; they’re cheap and getting them right gives peace of mind.graemeS83 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 9:28 pm. . . is there a torque value when tightening the new pipes to the engine or is it as tight as you dare. Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Cleaned up the battery connections with the wire brush attachment in the drill. Also did the power steering ground under the airbag tray as well as the crossmember where it bolts down hoping that it might fix the steering imbalance this time. It did not... Reeeallly need to get it sorted. At high speed the car feels very very unstable which is a horrible feeling. Could be a number of things but I feel like the steering is the best place to start for a number of reasons. Might give the forscan re-calibration a go as it seems relatively easy to do. If not I'll take it a shop. Has anyone else with the uneven steering experienced the car feeling like its on ice/very floaty at speed?
Had to remove the wheel arch liners as the new wheel and bumper set up has caused them to be eaten. The clearance seemed fine when standing but I assume that at high speed the wheel arch liners now get pushed back quite a bit with wind resistance through the large new oil cooler openings with the MS bumper. That, with the extra offset from the new wheels when cornering they might slightly catch. Also maybe cheap plastic liner clips weren't holding well enough. I now need new liners as I don't want to run too long without them. The major bit missing from the left is where I had to cut it out roadside with my knife as it was flapping about.

I've cleaned the MAF sensor and replaced the rear indicator, reverse and stop/tail bulbs with LEDs from Classic Car LEDs. Bit cheaper than replacing the whole light cluster - but the front halogen lights are really poor and not sure what road-legal options I've got.
Tomorrow the fake ignition coils and leads are being replaced with RRP ones. That's hopefully it then for the mild upgrades.
