Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Tried all afternoon to remove my exhaust mid pipe but the front bolts were rusted solid to the flange (nuts came off fine). Tried hours of plusgas soaking, extension bars and harsh language but no joy and not enough room for me to cut them off safely. The angles were too tight to get my impact gun in too. The bolts even shattered one of my 14mm sockets.
First time I've been annoyed with the design of the car. At least that took 18 months.

Aren't those bolts splined and basically part of the flange now? Give the flange a good whack with a hammer to break some rust off and give the bolts a big ol whack rearwards, the sumbitch should come off with them still in the flange. Don't let the hex head deceive you.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
I’m finding nuts rusted solid a MAJOR annoyance now, with my build. I’ve been following some guides on line doing this and that, some of them have 100k miles on it and guess what? No rust WTF! Anyway rant over, apart from nuts with cotter pins.....I hate em

100 mike trip to St Helens to fit this yesterday:
Unfortunately got a puncture moving the car afterwards and ended up buying four new Uniroyal Rainsport tyres.

That would explain why they wouldn't release!13Black wrote: ↑Fri Apr 06, 2018 7:38 pmAren't those bolts splined and basically part of the flange now? Problem was the rear bolts were also stuck (tho the springs and nuts came off) and I couldn't get enough back and forth play to clear the threads. Should have been more rough but I was nervous about damaging the cat. Was also going blind from all the plusgas dripped in my eyes by this point. Good times.
Scarlead, I feel your pain. Mine is only 2009 and every bolt I've seen since buying it has been rusted or corroded to a dimple. The previous owner lived right on the coast so maybe that's a factor. My 2004 X-type looks excellent underneath by comparison and not found a single rusted bolt in 10 years of DIY on it.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Another day 'down on the Farm' with Nick, for some diagnosmelon..
Smoke test showed all was well with no vac leak culprits (and an awesome 'ghetto' smoker,if Nick doesn't mind my using the term..but you'd expect Johnson's Baby Oil to smell a bit more fragrant ..)
Similar test thru' the exhaust, via the SAI,revealed a sealed system
So,onto live data testing using two OEM MAF sensors - mine and Nick's - plus the cheap pattern-part MAF I bought last year..idle and 5K rev comparisons, noting fuel flow,MAF flow and STFT's,on both mine and Nick's car. In an organised scientific fashion, the results of each test were written on Post-it notes, and attached across the edge of my upraised bonnet, for easy reading and comparison
Conclusions One or more injector is possibly underperforming..next area of attack.

It's as ghetto as Heath Robinson's Compton-born cousin.

Driven it!
Been away all week driving an automatic CR-V, and just needed to make absolutely sure the 8 was still working when we got home.
After a brief test drive, I'm happy to report that it is working very nicely indeed!

Hopefully this will fix the 3rd to 4th cruch at high revs I've been experiencing using Redline MT90, drained the old fluid normally then poured 2 litres in which means its slightly overfilled.

I don’t think you’ll cure the crunching if it’s started , maybe ease it slightly but the damage will already be done from experience , just hold the clutch in a little longer when changing .untakenname wrote:Hopefully this will fix the 3rd to 4th cruch at high revs I've been experiencing using Redline MT90, drained the old fluid normally then poured 2 litres in which means its slightly overfilled.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
I changed my oil over to MT90 for exactly the same reason and it appears to have "cured" the problem but then again once on track and really hot maybe the crunch will return!

Yeah, I’m undecided yet, I’m going to either carbon fibre it or coat it in flock, either way it’s not staying in that flat black coating.
Alcantara sounds like a challenge though, now you got me thinking, haha.

DIY flock kits apparently aren't much good.
I've had products from Ron at The Flock Shop who does it all electrostatically or some Nikola Tesla magic way. Really well rated.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Not today but Sunday. Felt like the first day of spring in East Lothian and the rain of the previous day had washed the salt off the roads. The RX8 has been hibernating in the garage since the end of October. Went online and taxed it, deflated the tyres (I'd pumped them up to prevent flat spots), disconnected the CTEK trickle charger, turned the key and.....started first time without hesitation, just as if it had been used the day before
Went for a 20 mile drive and remembered just how good it is to drive. The Focus has now been demoted, the RX8 is now the daily driver until October
