Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Fitted bonnet lifters today, found a snazzy way to install rivnuts, modified a YouTube tutorial to suit my needs, drilled the holes for the rivnuts, used the install bolt with a nut on, passed through bracket then screwed into rivnut, seated rivnuts, then whilst holding the bolt stationary screwed the nut down (this draws the rivnut up clamping it into bonnet) not as quick as using the proper tool, but easy enough and only costs the price of a couple of standard nuts, all sinched up nicely. Tomorrow may be a wrapping day for silver interior parts depends on the weather.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Refitted the power frame, definitely fun on your back and on your own, exhaust and prop shaft then started the car up for the first time in 14 days or so and it fired up fine and idled smoothly but the battery symbol was showing on the dash, cue one broken wire flush with the plug on the alternator. Dug out an old engine loom I just happen to have lying around, chopped off the relevant plug, soldered it to the wires in the car, heat shrink tubing to secure and insulate, then I noticed that the inlet temp sensor post supercharger had no wires connected to it, more soldering and sleeving and that was sorted too.
Now the car will reluctantly start only with a tickle on the throttle, and will not hold idle which is back to where I was when I purchased the car.
Curiously the inability to idle had sorted itself prior to my changing the clutch and the car having the battery disconnected and not being started for c14 days but now its back.
Did the 20 stomp reset jobby and no change to the situation.

When process starts going backwards you have to retrace your steps and undo the changes one-by-one.

Silly question, but was an ecu reset carried out after wiring repairs were completed? New spliced in wires could throw your readings out compared to old dodgy connection readings

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
ECU reset done. Made no difference. Held revs at 1500/2000 until fully warm and still it wouldn't idle when no throttle used!
Switched it off and had a tidy up. Started the car and it stuttered a bit and then "caught" and idled smoothly. Left it running as I moved the other cars out of the way.
Idle was fine as I reversed out of the drive but at the end of the road the idle issue returned! Went for drive and every time I stopped the engine died. A quick blast down a dual carriageway and the car ran faultlessly no stutter as the secondary and auxilliary ports opened as had been the case previously! At the exit the engine still would not idle.
Arrived home, pulled up on the drive and......normal smooth idle!!
Suggestions everyone?

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Sounds like the issue I had when battery terminals were loose, where it would intermittently lose fuel trims and stall whenever I came to idle, that's why I asked about ecu reset, but your's is a bit more complex

Sounds like it's agoraphobic and wants to stay and idle at home, or maybe it doesn't mind a drive out but gets anxious when you stop anywhere that isn't your drive. Find a car psychiatrist.

If it's as intermittent as is seems, it smacks to me of a poor electrical connection, but I'll leave it to others to suggest where.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Did the 20 stomp ECU reset. Car started with a little throttle then revved on its own to 2000rpm so I left it running for 20 minutes and it idled smoothly at 1000rpm when hot, blipped the throttle very gently and the usual engine dying on lift off did not happen.
Just been out for a 65 mile around the sunny villages of the south Cotswolds and at every stop the car idled happily. Stopped for a coffee, car started and idled then at the first junction it died but did start straight away again fortunately. Dipping the clutch whilst moving saw the revs drop away steadily down to zero. I did thus several times and then at a junction when I had to stop the engine happily idled did so each time I had to stop.
My hunch is that the problem is a sensor or wiring to a sensor is causing the intermittent fault but when and most importantly how do I identify the culprit!
Other than the idle niggle then the engine us running perfectly, albeit with some kangarooing on light throttle low revs high gear but that a rare occurrence driving an 8 anyway.
Edit at 17:30.
So after a nice sunny run this morning, with a few muddy sections I decided to wash the car and had just blasted all the muck off when mother nature struck with a whirlwind, hail, thunder and lightning!

Yesterday I fitted new from evora discs with ds2500 pads, the four pots make that job so easy!
Today I fitted my faking beat scoop (details in other thread) then while I had my rivnut tool out I decided to use rivnuts to hold down my radiator cooling cowl as I hate those plastic clips!

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Change the wrap on my silver internal plastic, as the old wrap was getting a little scratched and the silver plastic was wearing thin in places anyway, whilst I had the center console parts out I've attempted a repair on the rubber gearstick gaiter that was split, used a silicone adhesive/sealer, just need to see how it works long term. Also added some insulating tape to the gearstick threads and taper as the knob (a free illuminated one I got given with no wires attached) wouldn't tighten down in the right place.
