I work with the company that designed the stunt, and did that computer simulation. They are called Calspan. They still have those ramps in their basement!

Actually, after this was done on film a stunt group toured the US with the stunt. So it was repeated occasionally.

Top Gear also tried to do it. They failed a lot, but eventually landed something. It looked pretty terrible in comparison.

Unlocked the door of the RX8 for the 1st time in a month to put in the new tax disc!

Can't believe it's been that long since I drove it. Will drive it tomorrow, hopefully the battery hasn't lost too much charge

Not really true paul, if your driving a relatively new God awful diesel than the tax is very reasonable, it's only the older cars that get hammered.

Regarding rotaries, most RX7's here are taxed as 1.3's which I think is about 330 PA but all 8's are taxed as 1.7's which is 636PA unless you are driving a post June 08 R3 in which case the govt will bend you over and relieve you of 2350PA

Nissan Leaf is 120 quid to tax in Ireland, free in the UK? We still pay more, but get completely shafted for anything with a bit of performance.

I bet you won't see any 5 litre Mustangs in Ireland - all will be the 2.3 litre. Shame really.

Would love to see you in a Yaris dude and a diesel one at that. I reckon you'd be converted in no time

Diesels have it good in Ireland dude, you can have a 5 series Beemer for under 300 yoyos yet little ol blue rinse who heads to the shops once a week in her 1L yaris gets lifted for over 500 quid, where's the fairness in that?

Regarding the leaf, if I had my way they'd be paying 3K PA, awful awful yolks, can't believe you were actually considering one of those, I'd rather walk, in fact I could walk further on a single charge

I'd take a diesel yaris all day long over one of those electric POS. Dude answer me this, how does a guy like you who reminds me of clarkson with your love of poooooowah go from that to a Nissan bloody leaf?

Oddly enough when looking for a decent rust free RX8 in the summer I came across one (was sadly rusty) which was on an 07 plate but had really low VED as it was imported from Ireland :?:

Vehicle Excise Duty is our yearly 'car tax' or 'motor tax'

It's the duty levied on the privilege of owning a vehicle that is driven and/or kept on the public highways (and not a tax for using the roads, which tends to confuse people sometimes :))

Thanks Phil, thought it might have been a tax for importing a vehicle, btw do you guys pays such a tax? Just curious because we get crucified over here in VRT

Depending on the size of the engine and the year of the car the amount levied will vary but whatever way you slice it it's not cheap.I wouldn't mind but VRT is technically illegal but the Irish govt have been charging it for a long time and getting away with it.I'm open to correction here but AFAIK Ireland is the only country within the EU that does this. There was an EU court ruling against Ireland last week in relation to VRT which didn't abolish it but gave the govt a hard slap in the face forcing them to amend certain details relating to the tax.

They were told to do this a few years ago but it's such a cash cow for the Irish govt they simply ignored the ruling from the European courts but now the ruling from the courts has told them to implement their findings and fast!! If they don't there will be big fines and possibly others actions against the Irish govt.

I and no doubt the rest of the car buying public here feel very strongly about this as we are getting absolutely ripped off when it comes to buying cars from the UK.For example if I wanted to buy say a 2010 MAZDA MX5 NC and bring it in here it would cost me almost €3000 euros in VRT.Its ridicious  Why can't I hop on a ferry, buy the car and drive it back and pay the VAT on the car and be done with it? No,we get screwed in VRT.Interested to hear what's the story for you guys in the UK if you wanted to import a car? Do you get hammered like we do or is it just a case of paying a small duty on the car and that's that?

Dunno what it's like importing in to the UK, but if we try and export to France it's a similar story (although no where near as horrific)

When we took my (then brand new) Honda VFR750 over the ferry from England to Ireland back in 1994, we were handed a leaflet warning that we must ensure that we had evidence of the bike later leaving the country, otherwise we could get hit for massive VRT.

As it happens, we toured the Republic for a couple of weeks and then rode up to NI, to stay with Pauline's Dad for a while before taking the Belfast->Liverpool ferry, and I kept the ticket.

This was before the Internet Forums etc but we were on news:uk.rec.motorcycles and there were stories on there about guys having UK-registered bikes stolen or written-off in accidents while riding over in Eire, being sent Invoices from the Irish Government.

Now we live in NI and I know of some lads this side of the border that provide "garage addresses" for friends in the Republic....

Those " garage addresses" Dave are handy for us down south. It used to be a way of avoiding paying the VRT if you could prove that a car you bought in the UK was residing at a UK address for 6 months or more then you were exempt from the VRT, not sure if this is the case still tho.

If I buy a car in the UK can I leave it at yours for 6 or so months?!! I'll throw a few bob your way
