Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Finished the treatment on the sills which involved injecting vactan with a plastic syringe I use for servicing Eaton Superchargers at work. Worked very well and was satisfying to see it all dripping from the pinch rail
Followed that up with spraying the insides of all the cavities with Dinitrol 1000. Rust protection done.
Then changed the rear brakes with Brembo items and painted the calipers black to match the fronts I did the previous week.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
The nut splitter did the job on the drop link.
Removing the nut without any further damage to the stud. .
However the stud was still crusty with rust so a quick dressing with the thread file and then cleaning-up with a die got it sorted. .
Note that it's metric fine so 10x1.25mm pitch rather than the normal 10x1.5mm.
The hex inside was still too chewed to hold against the force of fitting a new nyloc nut, so I had to find two replacement 10mm fine nuts, one full plain and one half plain as a locknut. That side went back with no issues and got the left side out, rebuilt and refitted this evening, so that's all the suspension replaced.
Changed the spark plugs, after I realised that they hadn't been done for over 8 years, nearly 12,000 miles, including four track days, the journey from Essex to NI and a return trip over for Three Sisters.
Anyway, apart from confirming that the rear leading was indeed a little loose (just not fully tight) which accounted for the oil weep, the plugs themselves were in amazingly good condition. The MSD leads had kept the connections firm and clean, helped with a liberal spray of silicon oil when fitting.
The metal bodies of the plugs have some rust pitting but the business ends were perfect examples of clean running, with no broken or even worn electrodes.
I reckon an overnight soak in neat Seafoam and a light brushing with an old toothbrush and they're almost pass for new.
It just goes to show how running a Sohn and premixing, both with Shell Racing 2T, helps with clean combustion.
I'll certainly be keeping them as they may get someone else out of trouble and they'll be a useful "know good set" for diagnostics.
Tomorrow, or maybe next week I'll be flushing through the brake/clutch lines with new fluid.
I have braided hoses for both on the shelf and even a new clutch slave cylinder, but I don't want to start anything more complicated at this stage in the run-up to Kirkistown in August, so we'll save those jobs until after....

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Looking good there Dave nice work on that drop link good to see someone has sense to not tear the car apart before a show for some big jobs...
Thats one thing I love about some of the ignition leads, is having those indicator tags on the end. Trying to think which brand does it in bright yellow tags, is it magnecor? Thought I had seen some on a set of MSDs but I might be mistaken... just lovely and makes life so much easier hats off to whoever decided that was a good idea

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Oil and filter change and coolant flush, changed the hoses I could get to for my new green ones and brought the driver seat home
Also helped fit an engine to a BMW, which was stupid and I won't be doing again

Yesterday bigpete fitted a new lower arm.
The old one put up a bit of a fight.
And new steering wheel! It's so thick and satisfying. Driving is now basically a homoerotic experience.

It's on the same side as the repainted oil cooler too Harry. It's definitely lop sided in the looks department now!
But my wallet assures me that it'll all need replacing at some point, so not to worry

Gave her a wash with the new cordless pressure washer did the job so will be good for shows etc
Tomorrow's jobs are remove the front bumper, OS headlight to finally get the halo working, rear lights, fit the new seat (if my brackets turn up ), empty all the crap that's in her, refit the rear door cards then clean the interior
Oh and then there's Ollies car......

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Refreshed the brake fluid using one of these kits https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284411957872 which was nearly as easy as using my home-made breast pump kit, viewtopic.php?p=845137#p845137 which has gone missing since we moved over to NI - probably in one of the boxes yet to be unpacked.
The job was also made easy by having wrapped the threads of the bled nipples in PTFE tape last time and putting a dab of silicon grease on the nipple covers
Having replaced the suspension all round, plus engine, gearbox and diff oils, and spark plugs, I was expecting the car to feel a little different on the test drive.
She however was refusing to start and doing a good impression of being flooded, though there was no reason why.
Then I noticed that the CEL was staying on after the lamp test, while the engine was spinning on the starter.
Sure enough Torque confirmed that there was a detected issue with the ESS and the PCM wasn't going to let the engine start.
I cleared the fault, cycled the ignition and she started straight away.
Last time she went through a spate of these errors I bought a replacement ESS from BigPete and the problem instantly went away. Notice that I said "bought a replacement" and not "fitted a replacement" as the faults stopped as soon as the jiffy bag hit the doormat and the replacement has been in the glovebox since; for at least 4 years
Up and running in the garage and it was clear that the Redline MT LV had done nothing for the gearbox noise in neutral, clutch up, which if anything appeared even more noticeable than the previous Redline MT90. However, the initial selection of 1st and the later change to 2rd, with the cold 'box, was much sweeter. Those cold shifts with the short-shifter were a bit of a fight but now click-swift.
The engine didn't feel any different for fresh oil and plugs, as the old oil and plugs were all okay before, mainly just for my peace-of-mind. Same for the diff.
The brakes also felt the same, which wasn't really surprising as the old fluid was remarkably clean, despite being long overdue.
I didn't get to replace the fluid in the clutch line this time, despite the lift giving much easier (or slightly less awkward) access. However, these day my hands are swollen and having burst the capsules in the knuckles of my right hand, I have little grip strength and anything that pushes against the knuckles causes agony - which is pretty much the definition of access to the clutch slave nipple - unless anyone has an alternative approach.
The PZ suspension felt slightly more compliant than the Eibach Pro Sport springs on OEM dampers, as least over the badly repaired roads. I'm also running Racing Beat ARB's, so they make the car jolt more if one wheel hits a bump.
Anyway, there were no issues on the shakedown run, apart from my face aching from the fixed grin
The car's parked on the non-lift side of the garage again now, so we can again go in search of the clutch pedal SQUEEEEEAK that has returned.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Not today but yesterday Ian Mothersole took my car out on track at Castle Combe and guess what……………it’s still working fine. Ian’s ability not to push as hard as in his own car certainly helped to achieve this outcome with an engine temp approaching 120’C

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Paid Robert at Krown a visit today. Top class service and a relief of one of the best he has seen in a while. Protected and treated. Solid sills. Worst bit was behind skirt trim on drivers side. But actual structure good. A solid pass on bodywork and good prevention. 2hr 45 in total for full strip and treat. Very in depth and complimentary refreshments. Popping back down for a top up once all settled. Pictures below of some of worst areas and Robert working his magic:

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
The garage floor will be interesting... I've still got marks on the road from drips the first time he did it on mine, and subsequent marks/dark spots from every time I've topped it up myself (amusingly enough, all in different places Infront of the house where I jacked it up - whoops ) it'll be fiiiiiine it does come up with some effort and a pressure washer. I just haven't done all the spots I've created yet
