I thought that as well... I dunno how accurate this is but when I've got my OBD2 plugged in and crank it RPM readings vary from 190 - 260 but once the engine fires everything is stable such as idle, no misfires etc.

Best way to test is to remove the fuel pump fuse then crank and see what OBD says, that'll stop it from catching and firing up :thumleft:

Cheaper than bolting on a new starter in the hopes it'll fix it.

Likewise, if there is any doubt in your mind that the engine might be failing then I'd get a comp test done as the worry won't go away...

Weird that they did a starter cranking test, but didn't measure the RPM it spins at... That'll tell you whether the starter is the culprit or not.
They were testing the battery not the starter so don’t need the starter rpm.

At the bottom of the receipt it says "starter test" - so one would presume they tested the starter. It appears all they did was test the voltage drop across it, which is practically useless IMO.

They were checking cranking voltage/amps - the starter speed isn't a factor there.

Well took it in for the new starter motor and what a day it's been.

Garage fitted the N3R3 starter and it didn't spin the engine (Great) so they fitted my old one the N3H1-A which is keeping it turning over for now, in the progress of talking to the company that supplied the new starter so its either my garage didn't fit it properly or I got a duff unit.

Oh and then the car stalled 5 times in the 5 minutes home from the garage didn't reset the fuel trims / ECU took about 30 minutes at home after another disconnect and it's okay now

They would of disconnected the battery to change the starter motor, this would of cleared the old fuel trims, they would need to run the car for 20 minutes from cold to relearn fuel trims, this would obviously of been charged for if they did it, but most will just let the car relearn by itself whilst driving

As Paul said. It's normal behaviour after the battery has been disconnected. The car stalling is just it relearning the fuel trims on the move. Just keep the revs up a bit and it won't stall. Then after 20-30 mins it'll be back to normal.

I prefer to drive it rather than letting the fuel trims relearn at idle. Firstly it ensures the engine oil is hot and isn't idling cold. It takes longer than 30 mins to get the engine oil hot at idle. Secondly Mazda say not to let the car idle for more than 10 mins (I don't know why).

Car passed its M.O.T today with no advisories . Was a little concerned that it may fail due to the TOYO 200 cell cat.

Strictly speaking, it should have failed with the Toyo cat, as it's not Type Approved, so that's a fail even if the emissions test is a pass.

Thankfully many (most?) MOT testers either aren't up on the regulations or don't care.

Just out of interest, apart from the RRP one, are there any CATS people know of that are high flow and type approved ?

The emissions were fine, I think they just turn a blind eye to the ‘fine details’. I’ve been going to the same local garage for the last 4 years and apart from an advisory last year for a ‘slight exhaust leak’ due to me putting the MOT cat back on it’s always passed without even an advisory. To be fair though I only do 2-3k miles per year max in the Rex.

Whip those cats off post MOT boys. The unfiltered fumes smell too good to miss out on. It's the fabulous smell of ROTERRRREEEEEEE.

DECAT FACTS:

- Even the cheapest decats sound better than the best cat
- Rotary engines hate catalytic converters
- A duff ignition paired with a ropey cat could literally end you life
- Rotary fumes smell like the 'good old days' when we were all like, totally free man
- The catalytic convertor was invented by a WHITE WESTERN MALE. So if you use one you're basically a racist.
- 80% of women say that they can 'absolutely smell' decat fumes on their man and 100% of male decat drivers assume that makes them irresistible
- Catalytic convertors use up precious metals that, let's face it, are better saved for girly jewellery and smartphones
- Catalytic convertors are a ploy by the EU, or China... or whoever to slow your car and make your life less ROTARY. Using a cat makes you complicit in their evil scheme.
- Decats fumes in no way destroy your brain cells... or do they... I forget.

At least I smell irresistible, pretty sure that's what she meant...

Decided to get some blue tubing for my catch can as it was previously a mix of some clear and red tubing I had laying around

ImageStill got a long way to go to make the engine bay look nice, but that will have to wait until I have sort out the huge list of mot failures that need to be sorted by the 26th including a driver side air bag light, my new type approved cat being fitted and a new misfire that has decided to develop which I think is due to a vacuum leak somewhere Image.

Got the RX8 running on a backup ECU using the key held up next to the Anti theft aerial and installing the keyless box of that ECU and covering up the key from other ECU with Tinfoil.

Image

Image
Also managed to get the cruise control programmed onto the backup ECU as wires and buttons where already installed for use on the original ECU all it needed was a quick run of the program and it was done.

Image

Image

The reason for this running on backup ECU is in case anything happens to the original ECU which makes it unable to use cruise control , My guess of when the ECU may be changed is if it is taken in for the Mazda recall and they plug their computer in and update which may overwrite the cruise control and stop it from being activated again.

Just so you know Jetex offer that very same CAT direct from their website at a much reduced price.

It may he more free flowing that OEM (maybe) but does not compare to the MRP, Pettit or RRP CATs which are all 3 inch SS.

We are releasing a new improved version and will be the only provider offering SS316 as well as all tig welded joins :)
