Bigpete8, I did the same to mine on Friday whilst I replaced the hid lamps, first time I've cleaned the throttle body and it was dirty to say the least, maf got a clean as well. Car fires up quicker, although that could be a placebo

Mine was in the hope of resolving a startup issue, also did fuel trim reset. - saw the oil pressure guage sweep for first time so definitely worked 😎
started without manually adding throttle hot and cold now, so definitely improved 😃

Why the jaffing heck do you buy a new battery every year?! That's hideously bad for the environment.
What I choose to do with my car has zero to do with your opinion.

I use a battery conditioner during hibernation, but still like to fit a new battery, and the hell with the environment..
Key word, opinion.

I can voice it whether you like it or not...

Secondly, 'the hell with the environment' is a hideous sentiment. We're all on the planet together so why screw it up?

But hey, just my opinion

In the big scheme of RX8 ownership replacing the battery every year for the cost of a tank of fuel probably isn't that unreasonable to ensure startups are trouble free. (not that I'll be doing that)

A quick google suggests Lead acids are about 90% recyclable if disposed of properly

Gave it a good wash and wax yesterday. As soon as I finished the sun came out and with the Aurora blue paintwork glistening it made it seem that much more worth it!

A quick google suggests Lead acids are about 90% recyclable if disposed of properly
The thing that nobody takes in to account with all of this is the amount of environmental impact of actually recycling these things. Ok 90% of the materials can be recycled, but that process takes effort, resources and produces environmental nasties.

Same as the additional production 'costs' to the environment for every new battery that is produced. If we assume that a battery life is 8 years (give or take) then SeeJay is causing production of 8 times that number.

I'm not necessarily having a pop at SeeJay here, but ultimately if everyone decided to do it because "90% of the materials can be recycled" then the overall environmental impact is huge...

Edit:

@Bigpete8 - this is exactly the thing, everyone talks about fuels and such, but the other components impact the environment hugely. Likewise the batteries that go in leccy cars are crazy bad relative to the emissions "saved" by using electricity rather than petrol.

It's basically diesel being pushed by the government all over again

My suspicion, just based on the symptoms, is a weakness between the water jacket and oil gallery that only becomes a leak when the cooling system is pressurised. This "steam powered" a frothy oil emulsion into the catch can, which soon filled and then blew into the intake - cue lots of smoke, a soaked MAF and an oiled panel filter.

Chris and I have been chatting via PM and have a test plan to see if the problem is repeatable.

In the meantime he's also in contact with RR to arrange a post-mortem.
