Putting a replacement engine in! Although still a work in progress I'm a tad confused. What boots in behind the secondary air pump and exhaust manifold?? Image

Drove over to Aberystwyth from Cheltenham today with 7 other RX8OC members in their RX8s and one in a Bentley in the rain which abated when we got there so we had blue skies and sunshine as we arrived.
Great lunch a superb drive back down the Elan Valley. 299 trouble free miles for us all.

I would strongly recommend against doing that.

It can do nothing to prevent theft, as any thief wouldn't know until after they've already stolen it.

OTOH either you, or some future owner is going to get caught out when the battery goes flat or has to be disconnected for some reason.

Just landed so I can pick up car from Rotary Revs tomorrow.
Dreading it to be honest.
If it is not fixed I am thinking of jacking in this rotary madness and getting on with a simpler life; it is taking too much time out of my already busy schedule. Oh well.

:whathesaid: we both know your feelings all too well from our own experiences with our cars. Hopefully the car will be fine and we won’t lose you to the Piston dark side.
If you do however leave the RX8 ownership world hopefully you will still turn up to our club track days, schedule permitting!!!

Crossing fingers that it's totally fine.

If it's the worst case and you jack it in then you can always just come for the trackdays as Chris said! You're always welcome to drive mine and you know others here are happy to share too. All the fun and that rotary itch scratched, with none of the hassle.

Hopefully that can take the edge off any concern and it's a happy reunion with your car.

Booked the car in with Johnsons Mazda in Gloucester on 1st November for the passenger air bag and the fuel tank recalls. Discussed that the car was low and that the fuel pump had been uprated since the car was new and new seals would have been fitted at that time.

Arranged to drop over some time before 1st November for the service manager to look at the car and judge whether they can get it on a ramp to do the fuel tank work. Should be an interesting visit!

Check with Tony as I *think* the service record should already show that fuel tank recall as cleared, because of the replacement parts.

Took it out for a drive to Lyme Regis for the day with Mrs Honkytonk. Smashed into a pheasant on the way, thankfully no damage to the car as it bounced straight off the bonnet leaving a greasy stain, but can't say the same about the pheasant...

Image

Parked behind this... Unique number plate in Tesco in Shaftesbury before I filled up;
Image

Then got an excellent showing from the new RRP coils on their first decent distance run - whilst I was driving in a passenger-friendly manner, I wasn't hypermiling by any stretch (you try hypermiling the Dorset coast with all those hills...)
Image

Oh, and Lyme was nice too.

Refitted my dried-out rear lamp cluster, with new sealing foam in the hope it won't get water in, in the future.
Also investigating why my 3rd brake light in the boot lid doesn't work.
Is this a known weak point - here?

Well at least the reason it doesn't work is easy to fathom!
As the boot lid closes, the cable and sheath does bend quite sharply, but from the way the cable is held in position, Mazda must have intended it to be that way. Anyone else experienced a problem there?

Haha those pheasants do leave a greasy stain poor things. At least it wasn't through your grill.

Yep, I had that exact same issue! I used a no-solder crimp connector to repair the split, and re-covered the hose break with a new section I hot glued in to waterseal it. Not a permanent fix, but good enough. :thumright:

Common issue. Get some butt splices and lighter gauge of wire. Pretty easy to fix. Did it myself after I first got my car.

Used some heatshrink and loom tape around the joins/new cable. Also gave it a tad more slack too so it bends easily, isn't brittle and should hold up I hope.

I've never noticed any reference to it it on the forum so that surprised me.
I think the only good solution is a replacement cable tube but they obviously won't be readily available second-hand.

You're right about the cable tube, but I found a section of flexible heat-shrinkable ribbbed plastic hose in my local The Range's aquarium section to cover it with, then heated and hot glued the ends to form a seal. It's not quite OEM but it's close enough...

My solution isn't particularly water tight. But the issue is I may have cut off a bit more of the OEM loom than required at the time.. So next time I redo it I may actually take the brake light loom part out and do it properly with actual accessibility.

Qwakers :- I'd be happy to describe how I did it under how not to do it! (Joking aside, that can actually be useful.)
I see two particular problems with doing a a local repair: there's very little extra room inside the corrugated tube and it's very difficult to to pull out any significant length of cable on which to work.
So even though I added an extra length of cable to join the broken ends, working where the break occurs is very awkward and whether you choose to crimp or solder there's is a severe restriction on what you can put back in the tube.
I chose to make solder joints and wanted to use heat shrink tubing to cover them. But I had immense difficulties getting heat shrink to to disappear up the protective sleeve away from the solder joint, because of the lack of space between the wire and the protective tube.
If only you could get an equivalent of heat shrink tubing that you could fit directly on the point you want to cover rather than having to slide it on from a loose end!
