Successfully changed the coils and leads. RRP and Magnecore! Starting up a lot better now to say the least. Whoever designed the stock airbox should be shot... Painfully... Several times. I will never understand how to get it in/out with ease! (out is easier... in what even)

The coils the car had on it. 2x bremi (one came apart whilst removing the crappy HT lead) and 2x what I can only presume were factory originals... One with a lovely white spot underneath!

Probably the last actual thing Ill get done before the car hopefully goes off the road for winter!

Just drove to town and ooft does a proper ignition system make the car feel lively... Started it up again after going round tesco for it to stall... Think I forgot to do up the clamp around the accordian pipe... will have to check tomorrow not sure what else it could have been!

There's a knack to removing the airbox, which is dead easy.

Start with the engine hot, as this makes the accordian pipe soft.

Pull the box up to disengage the lugs and then push back hard to clear the front. If you've got a 192 then you can cut away the redundant VFAD pipe clip, which gives you more clearance.

Before refitting, apply a coat of silicone grease to the lugs underneath and to the end of the pipe, making it easier to fit and even easier to remove next time.

Getting it out is a piece of cake Dave... Almost anyway! Getting it back in is a nightmare! The accordian pipe when I push the box back always ends up causing it to not go far enough so I cant clear the VFAD etc with ease... Not sure if I just apply force in the wrong direction or what.. But I always have a massive struggle with it.

Guaranteed to be a combination of piston ring and bore surface finish. Are the bores alusil or sleeved?

Xamtex, is your Mazda 3 turbocharged?
Not likely, but if it's like my Mazda 6 it's possible that oil is going from the turbocharger into the engine.
(In my case it consumed all the oil before I had an indication that there was something wrong. 😞)

Modern engine bores can look glazed if they are alusil and you cannot glaze bust them in the traditional way it’s a job for a engine machine shop using a honing head fitted with diamond stones and then finishing with felt pads and abrasive paste.

Tried changing my sparks and coils. Failed miserably at the former. Gave up as I was losing light and it was raining. Don't think I've ever left a job unfinished but there's always a first...

They wouldn't come out. Blaming my tools as I think the socket extension I was using was intruding on the spark plug socket, and I either couldn't get leverage because of how tight the space was or, the extension wasn't long enough.

I will try again, with some better tools. Just miffed by my apparent lack of ability to do such a basic thing.

Better than snapping them off :D

At least you still have use of the car :thumleft:

TBH I thought the plugs were easy on the RX8 but that was in comparison to changing them on an LT1 V8 in a 4th Gen Camaro Z28 :!:

You need a wobbly extention or a uj as the access isn't directly in line and otherwise there's a strong chance of snapping the plugs and/or damaging the threads.

Have a UJ, just a bit short. (I tried it on the spark socket as well before someone says)

At least I didn't break the plug

Bit overkill but always worth having tools in Image

My spark plugs did the same on the end, TBF it was one of the easiest jobs I have done on the RX-8 funny how some cars cause people problems !

Breaker bar is massive overkill, but I don't have one at present so will be good to have about anyway. It's an investment, or so I tell Mrs Honkytonk.

Yeah TBF I used the breaker bar as it was nice and long so made it easy to wind it in then tighten up with socket and extension
