Actually I discovered it was the OZ Alleggerita I was reading about and not specifically the PZ alloys. So it's possible the alloys that come on the PZ could weigh more. Unless we find someone to weigh a pristine example we won't know for sure. I can't really find any substantial info on the PZ alloys specifically.

Well, after being let down unfortunately on having my shocks replaced the cars been out of action. However today it's now been done by my friendly mobile mechanic. It's like driving a different vehicle.
I was wondering how you were getting on with my old car. Good to read your on the road again and hopefully can enjoy done trouble free motoring now.
Well the shocks were really getting on my nerve because it's pretty much the only job on the car at the moment i'm not willing to do myself.

Going to de-mist the headlamps and improve the overall bodywork condition over the next few weeks then when I get back from holiday i'm having a decent hi-flow cat fitted (not decided which one yet) and probably your Toyo exhaust - although if I'm not a fan i'll probably invest in another brand of stainless exhaust.

I'll get reading and up to date with your car now i'm back in the rx8 picture a bit more!
With the ghetto decat the Toyo box sounded good on the car, a nice tone and no droning on the motorway.

part fitted new rear springs.... lessons i learnt so far:

cheap tools are useless
leverage is king
every job takes way longer than you'd imagine
preloading the springs makes a huge difference

...now to figure out how to tighten everything up now that things have settled

Gave it a wash once again! The swirl mark level on this car is atrocious. But from a distance it really shines.

I feel attacked! I say the paint works full of swirl marks, I imagine a finishing polish and wax would do it wonders. Nothings that deep really... All I need to get is a good finishing polish.. and a clear day to polish everything by hand probably.

I went to FW Motorsport today to have my steering aligned properly. Up at 4am to get there on time. Got lost on the way and ending up driving down a few green lanes (turns out the RX8 is a surprisingly good off-roader... until something broke off!) before discovering the picturesque Swerford.

Fergus is a really great guy (thanks for the recommendation Chris) and spent 5 hours sorting my steering. I told him my complaints with the handling and he identified the causes and set it up how I wanted.

One of the problems had been that the front wheels had been 10mm each toe out, so I'd been driving snow plough! Needless to say the handling is transformed and (as with all friendly experts I'm lucky enough to have taken my 8 to) it was fun learning.

He's also got a car collection that's drool worthy (but shhh it's a secret) and also had both supercharged and turbo'd 8s there being worked on. So there was some great chat and I'd highly recommend him for steering alignment as others have. Was totally worth the 8 hour round trip. From now on the steering on all my cars will be set up by expert, no more awful Hunter laser jobbies.

What was the cost of steering set-up?

Had my car aligned a couple of years ago (on a Hunter rig) when sports springs were fitted, but I am getting bald inner edge of front tyres, so perhaps I have same issue with snowploughing.....

The aim of front toe is that the wheels become (nearly*) parallel when the applied forces take up the slack in the linkages.
Typically, front wheel drive cars are set with the front wheels toe-out, as the wheels are pulling forward dragging the car.
Rear wheel drive cars have the front wheels set toe-in, as the car is being pushed from the back and trying get through the front wheels.

Try holding your hands out in front of you and then imagine them as the front tyres, either pulling the car or being pushed by the car.

Anyway, fwd cars are way more common than rwd these days and operators of alignments systems can often get confused...

* It's more complex

Fergus charges a flat fee of £150. But that may go up a bit because some cars (like 8s) can be a pain and take a long time to get right. In hindsight I feel bad not insisting on paying more given it took all day. Even if it does go up I'd highly recommend it given what a difference it makes to the handling and the high cost of decent tyres. I'd wire brushed my bolts, soaked them repeatedly over days, hit them with a hammer and some were still seized. Most alignment places won't be happy to get creative with a blowtorch, they just won't touch that bolt... or will snap it.

We had a good chat about wide Mazda tolerances in their alignment spec and the margin of error that the Hunter machines have (it's pretty high). Combine the two and you could probably have all the wheels pointing in different compass directions and it still make all the boxes turn green. It was quite an eye opener.

Ah, thanks. I couldn't see an address on their Facebook page and the website listed there just leads to a holding page, so I landed up finding the registered address which obviously isn't the same place as their place of business.

He keeps the address discreet for security as it's the family farm. His number is 01608 690099 (forwards to his mobile) if you'd like to discuss getting some work done.
